667. Arthur C. "Asa" MANGUM (Jacob MANGUM , James MANGUM , William MANGUM , Frances Silvester BENNETT , Richard , Richard , Thomas , John , Thomas "of Clapcot" , John , Thomas , Thomas ) was born about 1788 in Orange or, Richmond County, North Carolina. He died about 1862/1863 in near Magee, Simpson County, MS and was buried in Tullos Cem, near Sanitorium, MS.

Arthur and his brother Joseph Mangum were the first two Mangums to migrate
to Mississippi ca 1820. Arthur and Penelope moved south and rumor is that
the Indians stole one of his children. They stopped and somehow securedf
the child before moving. Magee was once known as Mangum after arthur. Arthur
and Jacob Magee married Butler sisters. Arthur is buried in the Old John Tullos
Cemetery near Sanitorium without a headstone. See Chapter 4 of THE MANGUMS
OF NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA, GEORGIA, ALABAMA...

Augustus Mangum, son of Cooper Mangum, reported to Grady Mangum of San Antonio
that Cooper Mangum attended the funeral of Arthur Mangum on the old John Tullos
Place between Magee and the Sanitorium and that Cooper, about age 5, almost
fell into the grave. He reported that Arthur Mangum had no marker to his
grave.

In the Spring of 1988 I visited the home of Mrs. Margie Mangum Smith of Magee.
She had earlier provided me with extensive information on the many Magee
Mangums, almost all of whom descend from Arthur Mangum and Penelope Magee. Mr.
Smith took me to see those parts of the area where the Mangums first settled.
We visited the old Tullis Cemetery where both Arthur and Penelope are buried
without headstones. He showed me where the old Arthur Mangum homestead was
located, including the spot where the old home stood for many years. He
pointed out where the original postoffice stood which had first been called
"Mangum," before the Magee's changed it to Magee. Their rationale was that
since a Magee had been the first postmaster, it should be named after him. It
was, however, known as "Mangum" for many years. He noted that when Arthur and
Penny had traversed to MS by oxwagen with his brother-in-law, Phillip Magee and
Penny's sister, Mary Butler Magee, indians somehow kidnapped one of the Mangum
children. Arthur and party remained in the area until their son was somehow
regained from the Indians. He did not know how he was taken from the Indians
nor what the Mangum Party may have done to the Indians!

A history of Magee notes that in 1919 Arthur Mangum entered a section of land
just west of the present site of Magee, twelve miles SE of Mendenhall under the
Bit Act for twelve and one-half centgers per acre. Mangum was followed in 1820
by his brother-in law, Phil Magee, who purchased 1650 acres east of the Mangum
Estate and built his home near the site of the Sanitorium Spring. The present
town of Magee was called "Mangum" until at least 1859.a

Arthur married Penelope A. BUTLER Penny before 1815 in South Carolina. Penelope was born about 1796 in Mebane, Alamance County, North Carolina. She died after 1870 in Simpson County, MS and was buried in Tullis Cem, Magee, Simpson County, MS.

Penelope Butler Mangum appears to have been living with her son Arthur Mangum
at the time of her death. In his household at the time of the 1870 Census,
Covington Co, MS, was a female, P.A. Mangum, born NC 1799.

Penelope (Penny) Butler and her sibling were identified in the Magee Book,
found in the Magee Library, Magee, MS. The book, which was in poor shape, was
owned by the librarian. I think she has retired by this time. (1989).

Mrs. Bobby Harkins of 4065 Boxwood Circle, Jackson, MS, 39211, believes that
the Butlers were from Bladen Co, NC. She notes that her Mary married there lin
1787.

Mangum genealogical notes by Ruth Peebles of 308 Church St, Livingston, TX
77351, photocopies in 1968, notes that Penny Anne Butler was born in Mebane,
Alamance Co, NC.

Randall E. Craft, Sr of Route 1, Box 11, Mize, MS, 39116, wrote that Mary Polly
Butler married Phillip Magee in SAMPSON Co, NC. Note conflict of counties.

Henry Lawson Butler wrote his letter to the family members in Montecello, MS,
in 1829 from Camden, S.C., Kershaw County.

John Mangum of PA wrote that both Elisha and William Mangum who both married a
LEE were sons of Jacob Mangum and Anna. William m Mary Lee b 23 Nov 1790 on 25
Feb 1816.

William Mangum resided in Chesterfield District, near York, SC until eight of
his nine children were born. In the fall of 1830 he with his family and one
slave came to GA bringing his early possessions in a covered wagon. He lived
on the banks of the head waters of South River adjoining his half brother, Rev.
James Mangum. He is buried at Mt. Zion Church.

Source: John Mangum of PA in a letter to John Palmer, Jan 1989, noted that
in the 1850 Census of Smith Co, MS, James Thornton 32, b SC, was son of John
and Agnes Mangum Thornton, daughter of JACOB MANGUM.

Agnes and her family also migrated to Smith Co, MS, and lived near her two
brothers, Arthur and Joseph Mangumj.

Agnes married James THORNTON before 1850 in South Carolina?. James was born about 1818 in South Carolina. He died in Smith Co?, MS.

John Mangum of PA notes in his notes to me that James Thornton was the son
of John and Agnes Mangum Thornton, daughter of Jacob Mangum. His source
is not given; my records do show that Jacob had a daughter named Agnes.

James and Agnes had the following children:

1146 M i James THORNTON was born about 1818 in South Carolina. He died after 1850 in Smith Co?, MS.

670. Joseph Edward MANGUM (Jacob MANGUM , James MANGUM , William MANGUM , Frances Silvester BENNETT , Richard , Richard , Thomas , John , Thomas "of Clapcot" , John , Thomas , Thomas ) was born in 1798 in Chesterfield Dis, South Carolina. He died in 1870 in Scott County, MS.

I have an extensive lists of Joseph's line. See family history
Joseph Mangum was a witness to a document between Thomas Sumrall and daughter,
Mary Sumrall, in Marian Co, MS 7/12/1821. Joseph must have come first to
Marian Co, MS, before moving to Simpson and SCott Co, MS.

The Rev. John M. Mangum, PO Box 188, Henryville, PA, 18332, provided me most
of the information I have on the line of Joseph Edward. In his genealogy
written essentially for his children, 1990, he wrote, "Joseph Edward Mangum was
born the year before George Washington died and the year the Mississippi
Territory was formed, with its capital at Natchez. Since the 1850 Census
indicates that his birthplace was SC, he probably was born in Chesterfield Co
where his parents had moved from NC...He died after 1870 in Scott Co, MS.

"Joseph Edward's lifetime was a period of tremendous economic expansion in the
United Staters. By 1860 the United States had 9000 miles of ralroad,
appreciably more than the whole of Europe. Its merchant navy was second in
tonnage only to that of Great Britain and American bvessels traded with every
corner of the world. Southern cotton was an essential item in the economy of
Europe. For many Europeans, American tobacco was almost as essential. Among
the much-discussed American exhibits were cheap clocks, sewingjjj-machines,
kYale locks, Colt revolvers and McCormick reapers; examples of an innovatively
mass-oriented technology...There seemed no limit to the victories of
democratic, spread-eagle `go-aheadness.'"

"In the 1820 census Joseph Edward was still unmarried and living with his
parents in Chesterfield Co, SC. Soon, however, he moved on to MS to reap his
benefits from the government's persistent stealing of land from the American
Indians."

Rev. Mangum then quotes my own family history noting that one Joseph Mangum
appears in Marion County, MS, in 1821 at which time he witnessed a gift from
Thomas Sumrall to his son's widow. I note in my family history that Joseph May
have been in Alabama in 1827 as his eldest child seems to have been born there.
lHe and his family next appear in the 1828 state census, later in the 1830
Federal Census of Simpson County.

Joseph had a second wife, whose first name was Feebie?. It appears that the
last three children Arthur b 1853, Lugenia (Eugenia?), and Frances may have
been from this marriage.

Joseph married Sara Matilda Elizabeth STUBBS before 1827 in South Carolina?. Sara was born about 1810 in Nc or Sc. She died in 1851/1852 in Scott County, MS and was buried in Scott County, MS.
