John Jadwin was only one of the three grandsons of the "Virginia Adventurer" Thomas Jadwyn-to have male issue. Robert and Jeremiah were Episcopalians. John was a Quaker.
England at the time was Puritan, and all the Jadwin's enumerated above were persecuted and left England on that account. Robert and Jeremiah. . . found themselves at home among friends in the province of Virginia, for Virginia received Episcopalians throughout Cromwell's rule. But John, being a Quaker, had to leave. John's wife, Ann Montague Jadwin, died before 1659, he returned to England, married Hannah ___________, and then settled in Talbot C., MD. CC Jadwin, in HLJ47.
Apparently the family remained in Talbot Co for another 150 years; in 1826 they moved to Wayne Co. PA. Descendents of John Jadwin'd daughter Jane Jadwin Critcher remained in Westmoreland Co. until 1879 (H53, from CCJ)

JOSEPH ALDEN was the 2nd son of Pilgrim John Alden. He was admittedFreeman (with his brother Jonathan) on June 3, 1657. (3 Ply. Col. Rec.117). He was 3rd on the list in the grants of land on the north side oftown in 1683 (Mitchell, p30). These lots ran 7 miles eastward from theTaunton line. By deed dated April 1, 1679, acknowledged April 14, 1679,but not recorded until April 10, 1700 (3 Ply. Rec. 194) his father "inconsideration of love and natural affection" conveyed to "Joseph Alden mytrue & natural son all that my share of land *** within the township ofBridge water."
Bridgewater was set off as a separate plantation in 1645, but the firstactual settlement was not made until about 1650. The Proprietors were allinhabitants of Duxbury, but of these not more than 1/3 became residentsof Bridgewater. The balance conveyed their shares to their sons or othersettlers. A stone monument in the present West Bridgewater occupies theplace where the CENTER TREE formerly stood. It was the center ofBridgewater, established by order of court shortly after theincorporation of the town on June 3, 1656.
"Joseph Alden departed this life 8 February, 1697, at the age of about 73years" according to 3 Alden's Epitaphs, 208, and the Alden Memorial makesthe same statement, which would indicate that he was born about 1624, butas he did not participate in the distribution of cattle in 1627, as didhis sister, Elizabeth, and brother John, it is certain that he was bornafter that important event.
It is not known where he was buried. The old graveyard in WestBridgewater, which was set off by the Proprietors in 1683, is on the eastside of Taunton Road, leading from Mill River to Mile Brook Bridge, Theepitaphs do not show that the ground was used much, if any, for theburial of persons living in other parts of the town, afterwards theSouth, East and North Precincts. For about 30 Years, before theestablishment of this graveyard, burials were probably made on the eastside of the Boston Road between the Meeting House and Sandy Hill, whereRev. Richard Stone, in 1835, and Mr. Edward Capen, in 1845, in diggingtheir cellars, found several gravestones, human bones and remains ofcoffins. These cellars were about 8 rods apart, and the burying placeoccupied probably 40 to 50 square rods.
His will, witnessed by Pallatiah Smith, Thomas Delano and Joseph Hayward,is dated December 14, 1696, and was proved March 10, 1696/7. (1 Ply. Col.Prob. 256.) His wife Mary and son John were the executors. The inventory,taken March 3, 1696, by "John Leonard, Joseph Snow and Samuel AllinSenr", amounted to 76 pounds. He evidently was quite a dandy for thetimes, his 11 shirts being valued at 1 pound.
The early Duxbury records were burned; what we have were collected fromvarious sources. The first book of records of Bridgewater, used until1702, is in a very dilapidated condition, many entries being incompleteor entirely lost. In among the records of the Town meetings are foundrecords of births, marriages, and deaths. The Vital Records, published in1916, were found in many places, including "a private record made byNahum Mitchell of the records of the First Church of East Bridgewaterwith additions and corrections by the copyist", and other privatemanuscripts. Such inadequate records make it necessary to seekinformation about Joseph's family in other directions. From her father'swill we know that Joseph Alden married MARY SIMMONS.
We know from his will that Joseph Alden had sons, Isaac, Joseph and John.He does not name any daughters, but that was not unusual at that timewhen "settlements" were made on future sons-in- law. Over 100 years afterJoseph Alden died, in a letter dated Middleboro, April 14, 1801, when hewas over 82 years of age, John Alden wrote a "Genealogical Letter"containing such valuable information; but, as he did not then know thathis grandfather was Joseph, ("but I do suppose his name was John") wecannot place too much reliance on his statement that his grandfather had(only) 3 daughters, 2 who "married into the family of Snow ofBridgewater; the other married a Burrell of Weymouth." We have themarriage of Elizabeth and Benjamin Snow,and Mercy and John Burrell.Besides these, Mitchell says "probably Mary who m. Samuel Allen 1700",and the Alden Memorial adds Hopestill, who married Joseph Snow. We alsofind the marriage of Sarah Alden and Joseph Crossman. The records arevery incomplete, but for purposes of our present compilation, we willenumerate� the following as probably.
