In Randolph, Madison, and Washington Counties ILLINOIS in 1820 there were no Dickey families. They didn’t start arriving until soon after 1820, and many of them married the Henry Tate East descendants. This page is a rough outline to keep track of the many Dickey families.

Next door to John A Dickey in 1870 was Harriet L Dickey, b 1816 in SC and Nancy C Dickey, b 1818 in SC. They lived together.

John, Alexander, and Smith DICKEY were all brother, and may be younger brothers of this above James Dickey.

These three younger brothers also moved to Randolph Co in the late 1820s. They were all married by 1830 and had children by 1830.

John Dickey, son of John A Dickey and Jane Hood, was born 1788 in SC. He married Margaret McDill in SC about 1812. She was also born in 1788 in SC. They moved to Randolph Co IL in the late 1820s with many of their children. John died at Sparta, Randolph Co in 1847, and Margaret was still alive into the 1880s. Their chidren were-

a.   John M Dickey, b 1813 in SC (age 30 in 1850), married Sarah Jane Gibson in Washington Co IL in 1834 and they lived in Washington Co close to his brother William Dickey. Jane Gibson was born in 1809 in SC and died in IL in 1872. John died in 1865. Both are buried in Old Salem Cemetery in Washington Co. They had two children-

      1.   Samuel Dickey, b 1836, died in 1885. He served in the Civil War and married Ellen _____ about 1873. In 1870 his widowed mother lived with him. They lived a few doors from his uncle William M Dickey. Ellen was born in 1849 and died in 1920. Both lived at died in Washington Co. They are buried in Old Salem Cemetery in Washington Co. They had three children by 1880-

             a.   John T Dickey, b 1873, died in 1929 and was buried in Old Salem Cemetery in Washington Co.

b.   William M Dickey, b 1815 in Aitken Co, SC, married Elizabeth Gibson in Washington Co IL in 1836. They lived in Washington Co in 1840 and 1850. Elizabeth was born in SC in 1803 and died in Washington Co in 1843. William later married Isabelle C Kennedy in Perry Co in 1848. This was her second marriage; the first was to William McIntosh in 1844 in Randolph Co (they has a son James Kennedy McIntosh). Isabelle was born in 1820 in the Cumberland Mountains of TN, and died in 1891. William Dickey died in 1889 in Washington Co. William and both wives are buried in Olad Salem Cemetery in Washington Co. His second marriage produced nine children, making twelve children total-

      1.   Samuel Gibson Dickey, b 1838, died 1916. He married Mary _____. She was born 1840 and died 1912. Both are buried in Old Salem Cemetery, Washington Co. They had eight children-

      5.   Marquerite Jane Dickey, b 1851 in Washington Co, was named after her aunt Marquerite Walls, her mother’s sister.

c.    Jane H Dickey, b 1817 in SC, married Samuel Gibson in 1835 probably in SC (no marriage record for them was found in IL). They lived in Washington Co IL in 1840. Very close neighbors in 1840 were Arthur Hair (born 1797 in Ireland), Henry Tate East [E14d1] (born 1790), Andrew M East [E14d1b] (born 1815), Robert Gibson Jr, Archibald Coulter, and John Dickey (born 1813). Jane Dickey died in the 1850s and Samuel and his children were still in Washington Co in 1860, now living next door to Henry T East [E14d1h], son of Henry Tate East. Samuel Gibson was born in 1813 in SC, son of Irish parents, and died in 1885. His children were born in Washington Co IL-

The children were shown with the correct mother. The marriage records show that it was Sam who married Ann Eliza McMillen in 1855 in Randolph Co. Anna was born in 1830 in IL. Sam served in the Civil War. They lived in Washington Co. Sam died in 1872 and was buried in Old Salem Cemetery in Washington Co. Anna was found in St Clair Co in 1880 with her daughters. They had seven daughters and a son, all born in Washington Co-

Smith Dickey, son of John A Dickey and Jane Hood, was born in 1796 in SC. Smith married Jane Hare in SC in 1820, and they moved to Randolph Co IL in the 1820s. Smith died in Randolph Co in 1848. Jane was born in 1793 in Ireland and died in 1857 in Randolph Co. They had eight children-

Alexander DICKEY, son of John A Dickey and Jane Hood, was born in 1799 in SC. He married Margaret Hare in 1825 in SC and they moved to Randolph Co IL soon after. Margaret was born in 1798 in Ireland and died in 1868 in Randolph Co. Alexander in 1860 in Randolph Co. They had seven children-

2.   Rachel Imogene Dickey, b 1830 in Randolph Co IL, married James Sproul in Randolph Co in 1850. He was born in 1829 in Scotland and died in 1916 in IL. Rachel also died in 1916, both in Randolph Co. They had five children-

      a.   Elizabeth J Sproul, b 1851, married Hy Gardner in 1872 at St Louis, MO. Hy was born in 1852 and died at Sparta, Randolph Co IL in 1908.

      b.   Margaret C Sproul, b 1857, died in 1883.

      c.    James Henry Sproul, b 1861 in Sparta, Randolph Co IL. He married Josephine Booth in 1889. She was born in 1865 and died in 1958. James died in 1920.

      d.   Mary A Sproul, b 1864, died in 1940. She married R C Brown in 1882. Mr Brown was born in 1859, died at Sparta, Randolph Co in 1937.

      e.   Alexander D Sproul, b 1866 in Sparta, Randolph Co IL, died there in 1931. He married Mary S Brown in 1877. She was born in 1866 and died in 1931.

7.   Sarah Dickey, b 1839 in Randolph Co IL, married Thomas Sproul in Randolph Co in 1857

The two Hare sisters, Jane and Margaret, arrived at Charleston, SC on the brig Prince Leopold on 19 March 1820. There were three in their goup: Jane Hare, age 20; Margaret Hare, age 20; and Alexander Hare, age 13. They departed from Belfast, Ireland. They were British subjects, but much of Ireland was British in the 1820s. They came as indentured servants. And the Authur Hare who lived close to Jane H Dickey and Samuel Gibson above, arrived at Charleston from Belfast, Ireland in October 1826 on the brig William. He was born in 1797, so was of age to be their brother. The census record spelled his name as Hair. He died in 1855 and was buried in Old Salem Cemetery in Washington Co; his wife was Elizabeth, born 1809 and died in 1853. She was also buried in Old Salem Cemetery. Arthur and Elizabeth had a son John Hair, born 1843 and died in 1865 at Memphis, TN.

John Dickey, born in PA in 1803 of parents born in PA, married Jane Truesdale about 1833 (or about 1844 if she was a second wife). This Jane was born in VA in 1811 (in the part which became WV in 1865). They lived in Logan Co OH in 1850, and in Randolph Co IL in 1860 and into the 1880s. Jane died in Randolph Co in 1882. They had five children-

2.   James A Dickey, b 1835 in VA, was a carpenter in Randolph Co IL in 1860.

3.   William Dickey, b 1837 in VA, married Sarah S _____ in 1860, probably in Logan Co OH where he lived in the 1850s, then they moved to Randolph Co IL where his family had moved. Sarah was born in OH in 1833. They had two children born in Randolph Co-

4.   Joseph A Dickey, 1844 in OH, lived in Randolph Co IL in 1860. He married Eliza Brooks in 1867 in Randolph Co. She was born in Ireland in 1844. They had two children-

5.   Milton M Dickey, b 1848 in OH, lived in Randolph Co IL, and married Nancy J Lively in 1870 in Randolph Co. She was born in Washington Co IL in 1850. They lived at Eden, Randolph Co close to his brother James. Milton died by 1900 and Nancy and their children were still in Randolph Co at Sparta in 1900. Nancy died at Sparta in 1828. They had nine children-

      b.   Harry A Dickey, b 1873, married Mary _____ in 1897 and lived at Chester in Randolph Co. She was born in IL in 1876.

      c.    William Dickey, b 1875

      d.   James A Dickey, b 1877, married Maud M Lewis in Randolph Co in 1901, and died about about 1906 because Maud then married Henry Wolf in Randolph Co in 1907. Maud was born in IL in 1884. She and James had a daughter-

             1.   Beulah Dickey, b 1902, used her step-father’s name Wolf in 1910, but used the Dickey name in 1920 She lived in Randolph Co.

      f.    David A Dickey, b 1883

      g.   Clifford Dickey, b 1886, married Emma Stumpe in Randolph Co in 1906. In 1900 he was living with John A Miller and his wife Emma B, and was working for room & board as a farm laborer; he was not attending school.

      h.   Ella May Dickey, b 1888

      i.     Hazel Dickey, b 1893, had not married by 1920.

 

James Dickey and his wife Sarah E; were one of the first two Dickey families directly from Scotland to arrive in the area. They settled in Randolph Co about 1855. They were born in 1827 and 1835, and had three daughters by 1870 who were born in Randolph Co-

David Dickey and his wife Mary were the second Dickey family who came directly from Scotland. This family also settled in Randolph Co. Davis was born in 1825 and his wife in 1826. Their children were born in both countries, thus indicating that they also arrived about 1855-
