1840: Pittsylvania County Census.

Ezekiel is not listed in his place is a Patsey East (male). I found no other reference to a Patsey East other than a female married twice in Halifax 1793/1806.  There is reference to a Jesse Patey and other Pateys in several land grants adjacent to Thomas East.  See land grant to Obedience East 3 Aug 1796 “Obedience granted 440 acres on branches of the Staunton River adjoining her own land and the land of Owen West and Patey’s former line now Wards”.  Grant 34 page 533 Jesse Patey granted two hundred and sixty acres next to Thomas East.

A comparison between 1840 and 1830 neighbors of Ezekiel indicate the following common names: David Hall, George Gilbert, Reuben Eanes, John Gilbert, Mary Thurman, and Archibald Worsham.

A comparison between 1840 and 1850 neighbors of Ezekiel indicate the following common names David Hall, George Gilbert, Emanuel Waines, and William West.

Census: Patsey East

   1 male 60-70 (Ezekiel 67), 2 males 5-10 (???), 1 female 0-5 (???), 1 female 10-15 (Permelia 15)

Not certain about the lineage of the 2 males or 1 female children.

From this comparison I have a strong feeling that Patsey East was really Ezekiel East or either someone with the last name Patsey.

The Family of John Wesley East and Elizabeth Kelsey East

@ Family History Center

Note: Review of the above article leads me to seriously doubt that John East is the John East that crossed on the Oregon Trail. Article referred to John East as a “Virginia English Aristocrat”, further elaborates that among his forbears was a member of the Ball family, he had received a good education and become a surveyor as had his more distinguished distant cousin (referring to George Washington, the Ball family produced some Washington’s).” Note this East family though traced to English background and had one or two slaves was not really what you would call Aristocrat. He may have had a good education. His Uncle Thomas East starting teaching at Mount Carmel School January 15, 1833. No data reference to Ball family.  Other large East family from Virginia were located in Augusta County Virginia in 1800 and Accomack County Virginia. Both families had members of the family named John W.
