Griffith

griffith Isaac Griffith was born about 1804 in NC. He married Matilda Evans in the 1820s. She was born in NC also, about 1805 (was age 60 in 1870, 73 in 1880). They lived in Daviess Co in 1850 and at Fordsville, Ohio Co, in 1860. Isaac died in the 1860s, probably in Ohio Co since Matilda was still living there in 1870, at Whitesville. She died after 1880. They had at least eleven children, all born in KY-

1.    Jasper Griffith, b 1829; he was a witness at his sister Kizzy's marriage to Henry Hand in 1857. Jasper married Casandra E Ford in Daviess Co in Jan 1851. (3nm,1m)

       a.  Edgar E Griffith, b 14 Oct 1871 in Daviess Co KY. He was a tobacco merchant and died at Louisville, on 3 April 1953; he was buried in Resthaven Cemetery at Buechel, Jefferson Co KY. Edgar was a widower when he died. He had married Dora _____ about 1896. She was born in KY in on 9 Aug 1868, and died in Jefferson Co on 5 Dec 1932; she was buried in Resthaven Cemetery. Her parents were from IN. Edgar then married Henrietta Helm. She was born at Louisville on 13 June 1880, daughter of John Helm, and died 11 Jul 1946 of a stroke at Louisville. She was also buried in Resthaven Cemetery. Edgar had one son-

            1.  Edward Franklin Griffith, b 6 Jul 1898 in KY, was a Western Union telegraph operator at Louisville. (M,6v)

Edgar’s niece, Irene Griffith, lived with him and Dora in 1910. Irene was born in KY in 1901. (321s,6fd)

       b.  James Griffith, b 1874 (321s)

       c.  Samuel Griffith, b 1877 (321s)

There is a 15 January 1876 marriage license for a William Elisha Griffith and Elizabeth E Baize in Ohio Co. Elizabeth was a daughter of John J Baize and Sarah Pearson (or Pratt), and was born 3 March 1853 in Ohio Co KY. She died at Deanefield, Ohio Co on 1 April 1912 and was buried in Sugar Grove Cemetery where many of the Isaac Griffith-Matilda Evans descendants were buried. William E Griffith was born in KY in 1854, and in 1910 they had been married for 34 years. Elizabeth had four children by then, with three still living. One was: Sallie M Griffith, born in 1889 in KY. William appears to be a son of Clinton Griffith, who was born in KY in 1830 and married Mary F Crawford in 1852. (3nq,1md,321s)

7.    Keziah “Kizzy” Griffith, b 1840, married Henry C Hand on 12 Jul 1857 at her parents' home. He was born in Spencer Co KY in 1839 (see below). Kizzy had two daughters by the time she died in a house fire at Whitesville in Ohio Co with her youngest daughter in the mid 1860s. This may have been during the Civil War. In any case, the remaining daughter, Frances, eventually moved in with the Thomas Howard Tanner-Lydia Jane Whitaker family. The Tanners had recently taken on the duties of raising their grand-children when their daughter America Tanner died, and Frances apparently earned her keep minding the young children; actually, Frances was not much older than the eldest of the children she had to take care of. The children of Kizzy and Henry were-

       a.  Frances Matilda Hand, b 27 Sep 1858 at Whitesville in Ohio Co, married William Andrew Rowan [R2b1b4] in Ohio Co on 13 Feb 1876.

       b.  dau Hand, died in a house fire with her mother in the mid-1860s at Whitesville, KY. (UR,3n,1m)

8.    Frances Griffith, b 1842, was not married by 1870. She died 15 June 1918 at Aetnaville, Ohio Co. Frances had married a Mr Wells, but was a widow when she died. The only Frances Wells in the Ohio Co / Daviess Co / McLean Co area in 1880 was Mrs Frances Wells, wife of Richard Wells. Richard was born in KY in 1837; his wife said she was age 33 in 1880, five years too young. Richard had a daughter: Mary E Wells, born 1862 in KY. Since Frances Griffith was not married in 1870 and was living with her parents, then Mary E must have been a step-daughter, but lived with Richard and Frances in 1880. In 1870 Richard’s wife was Matilda A _____ from KY. She was born in 1835, and they had three children. Mary E was the eldest. The other two children from the 1870 census were Lucy C and James R Wells. (3n,1qrsd)

He died 23 December 1975 in Daviess Co. (Z,KYd,3d)

11.  Matilda Griffith, died 14 April 1854 of cholera in Ohio Co. Her death record clearly shows her name, the names of her parents, the death date, but the number of years, months, and days she lived is not complete. All that can be clearly read is that she was born in Nelson Co KY, died in Daviess Co, and was ?? years, 7 months, and 14 days old when she died. The 1850 census does not show her, so she was probably born after the summer of 1850. Her parents were living in Daviess Co in 1850, but in 1860 were in Ohio Co. (1d) (MR,RE, UR,GA,3n,1mqrsu)
