Benjamin Osborne Edgerton was born at Wallingford, Vermont on December 28, 1811, the son of Philip Edgerton and his second wife, Narcissa Osborne.  Benjamin was named after his maternal grandfather, Rev. Benjamin Osborne.  Benjamin was raised in Wallingford.  He made his living as a farmer and stone mason.

Circa 1825-30, Benjamin removed to Chautauqua County, New York, together with his father and most of his brothers.  The family first settled in the town of Ellery.  Benjamin was married there on June 21, 1835 to Sarah Marie Cadwell, daughter of John and Alice Cadwell, formerly of New Haven, Vermont.

Benjamin and Sarah (Cadwell) Edgerton had four children:  three sons, Julius, Frank William and Arthur James; and one daughter, Emma Louise.  The eldest son died at the age of 18; the other three children were each married and had children.

Shortly following his marriage, Benjamin Edgerton settled in the nearby town of Ellicott, New York (also in Chautauqua County).  His elder brother, Edwin, also settled in Ellicott at this time, and it appears from the 1840 Federal Census roll of Ellicott (see below) that the brothers lived adjacent to each other.  After a few years in Ellicott, Benjamin and Sarah removed further west to Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

The household of Benjamin Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Ellicott, Chautauqua County, New York (pg. 104), with the following enumeration:

1 male “20 & under 30”  (Benjamin); and,

1 female “20 & under 30”  (wife Sarah).

The household of Benjamin Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio (pp. 296-7; dwelling #211; family #219; enum. August 28, 1850), as follows:

At the time of this enumeration, Benjamin was residing adjacent to the families of his father, Philip Edgerton, and his father-in-law, John Caldwell.  They were both recorded as heads of households directly after Benjamin on the Thompson census roll.  Curiously, Benjamin and Sarah’s eldest son, Julius, was not recorded with the family in either of the 1840 and 1850 census enumerations of the family.

The household of Benjamin Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio (p. 607; dwelling #191; family #183; enum. June 6, 1860), as follows:

Benjamin Osborne Edgerton left an estate which was probated in Geauga County, Ohio in the year 1878 (file #E-61).  A copy of the probate record is currently available on microfilm at the Chardon Library, 110 E. Park Street, Charcon, Ohio 44024.
