Benjamin Storrs Edgerton II was born at Randolph, Vermont on May 18, 1817, the son of Benjamin Storrs and Millee (Hendee) Edgerton.  Curiously, Benjamin’s birth was not included in the record of the family of Benjamin and Millee Edgerton at Randolph (VR A:104); but it seems clear from later records that he was a twin to the youngest daughter, Benjamine S. Edgerton, whose birth (on May 18, 1817) was included in the family record.  The similarity of names between these two youngest siblings further supports the belief that they were twins.  Benjamin Sr. died October 12, 1816, while his wife was only two months pregnant with the twins.  As they were born posthumously, it seems logical that they would then be named in memory of their deceased father.

Benjamin S. Edgerton was raised in Randolph and later settled in Warren, Washington County, Vermont.  He was married to Mary Elizabeth Eldridge, by whom he had one child – a son, Edward Henry, born in Warren on August 31, 1863.

Benjamin S. Edgerton, aged 24, of Warren, Vermont enlisted on December 4th, 1863 as a private in the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery Regiment, Company H.  He was promoted to Full Qtr Master Sergeant on December 28, 1863.  The regiment was active throughout 1864 in Virginia and fought in the battles at Spotsylvania Court House (May 1864), and Cold Harbor (June 1864), among others.  Benjamin Edgerton died September 21, 1864 (probably in hospital in Virginia) from “wounds received in action” on September 21st (see Roster of Vermont Volunteers During the War of the Rebellion, 1861-66  (1892).

Mary E. Edgerton, widow of Benjamin S. Edgerton, applied for a Civil War widow’s Pension on December 8, 1864 (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #75173, Certificate #54395).  Later, on September 29, 1870, Edward A. Eldridge (Mary’s father), as guardian of a minor child of Benjamin S. Edgerton, also applied for a Civil War pension. (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #190536, Certificate #145901).  This latter application was presumably on behalf of Edward Henry Edgerton, Benjamin’s only child.

Mrs. Mary (Eldridge) Edgerton was remarried on November 28, 1867 at Warren, Vermont to Pember C. Perkins.  She died at Warren, Vermont on November 14, 1907.
