Bethiah Edgerton, daughter of Zebulon and Elizabeth (Tracy) Edgerton.
Bethiah Edgerton was born on September 8, 1764 at Norwich, Connecticut, the sixth child of Zebulon Edgerton I and Elizabeth Tracy. Bethiah was raised in Franklin (then Norwich), Connecticut and resided there her entire life. She was never married. Bethiah, daughter of Zebulon Edgerton, was not the Bethiah Edgerton who married Eliphalet Metcalf at Franklin on October 12, 1788 (VR 1:31), as reported in a number of histories and genealogies (eg. The Hyde Genealogy, “Asenath Edgerton’s Letter”, et al.). Bethiah Edgerton, “daughter of Zebulon and Elizabeth Edgerton”, died unmarried at Franklin, Connecticut on August 31, 1810 “aged 45 years”, as reported on her headstone at Gagertown Cemetery (Franklin, Connecticut). Bethiah Edgerton, wife of Eliphalet Metcalf, was the daughter of Hezekiah and Bethiah (Peck) Edgerton, born in Franklin on August 24, 1772. For proof of this latter relationship, see the distribution of the estate of Hezekiah Edgerton (April 19, 1817), which sets out land to each of Hezekiah’s married daughters, including “Bethiah Metcalf”. In the latter years of her life, Bethiah Edgerton lived with the Gager family in Franklin, Connecticut. She died there on August 31, 1810, leaving a Last Will and Testament, dated June 26, 1810. The will was proved on September 19, 1810 at Franklin, Connecticut before Eli Hyde, Justice of the Peace. In the will, Bethiah mentions her “Hond Mother Elisabeth Edgerton”, “Sister Elisabeth Bentley”, “Sister Asenath Edgerton”, “Brother Zebulon Edgerton”, and three of her nieces and nephews (children of Eleazer and Elizbeth Bentley). The will was witnessed by John Gager Jr., Phebe Gager and Job B. Gager. Bethiah Edgerton was buried in the family plot at Gagertown Cemetery, in Franklin, where several other members of her immediate family are also interred. |
