Bradford Edgerton was born in Norwich, Connecticut on February 11, 1769, the son of Elijah Edgerton and his second wife, Bethiah Billings.  Very little is known of Bradford’s childhood or early life.  His father, Elijah, appears to have left Norwich when Bradford and his sister, Sarah, were still children.

By the year 1800, Bradford had settled in Painted Post, Steuben County, New York, where he had a wife, Anna, and six children:  Sally, of whom there is no futher record; David C., who married Lois Brown of Canterbury, Connecticut and settled in Sullivan Township, Pennsylvania; William who married Wealthy Mudge and lived in Jackson, Pennsylvania, LaGrange County, Indiana, Branch County, Michigan and finally Boone County, Iowa; Minerva, who married Joseph Ames and lived in Sullivan Township, Pennsylvania; Maria, who married Jared Butler and resided in Tioga County, Pennsylvania; and George D., who lived in Lindley, New York.

The parentage of Mrs. Anna Edgerton is currently unknown.  Her surname is sometimes listed as “Harvey”, although no documentary evidence of this has been found.

The household of “Bradford Ajudant” was recorded in the 1800 Federal Census of Steuben County, New York, as follows:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Bradford);

2 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons David and William);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Anna);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter ?); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Sally).

The household of “Bradford Edgeton” was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Painted Post, Steuben County, New York (pg. 417), as follows:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Bradford);

2 males “of 10 and under 16”  (sons David and William);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son George);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Anna);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Sally); and,

2 females “under 10 years of age”  (daughters Maria and Minerva).

Bradford Edgerton died in Painted Post, New York circa 1813.  His will was proved in Steuben County on April 26, 1813.  Silas Cook was named executor and guardian of the minor children.

Most of Bradford’s descendants dropped the “R” from their surname, going by the name Edgeton.  All three of Bradford’s sons – David, William and George – are named as “Edgeton” on their gravestones.  Census records, vital statistics, and biographies generally list descendants of these sons as “Edgeton”.  The reason for the name alteration (whether inadvertant or intentional) is not known at this time.
