Bradford David Edgerton was born in Painted Post, Steuben Co., New York on November 4, 1821, the eldest son of David C. and Lois (Brown) Edgerton.  He was no doubt named for his paternal grandfather.  There is no primary record of Bradford’s birth in Painted Post vital records, however the following item from The Mansfield Advertiser on November 8, 1899, verifies family reports:

“Bradford Edgerton of Sullivan twp. was 78 on Nov 4th, attending was his sister Mrs. O. Larrison of Caton, father of Merritt Edgerton.”

Bradford appears to have followed his father’s (and grandfather’s) custom of dropping the “r” from their last name.  The census records of Bradford’s family, as well as the inscription on his tombstone, uniformly list his surname as “Edgeton”.

The household of Bradford “Edgeton” was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (pg. 28; dwelling #49; family #49; enum. Oct. 10, 1850), as follows:

Bradford’s first wife, Abigail, died in Sullivan, Pennsylvania on September 28, 1866.  The following notice of her death was printed in the Tioga County Agitator on October 17, 1866:

Bradford was remarried on March 17, 1868 in Mansfield, Pennsylvania to Mrs. Eunice Ann (Squire) Hulslander.  Eunice was the daughter of Judson and Permilia (York) Squire and the widow of Thomas Jacob Hulslander, who had died during service in the Civil War.  Bradford had at least one child by his second wife, a son Merrit B., born in December 1875.

The household of Bradford “Edgeton” was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Rutland, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (pg. 1; dwelling #1; family #1), as follows:
