According to the above census record, Emma was the mother of five children, four of whom were still living.  Byron’s occupation was listed as “day laborer”, and the two elder children, Grace and Harley, were noted as “at school”.  The enumerator of the above census, in addition to noting states of birth, also noted each individual’s city or county of birth.  That is, Byron was born in Oneida Co. (his father in Lewis Co., and mother in Oneida Co.); Emma was born in Lewis Co. (her father in Oneida Co., and mother in Lewis Co.); Grace was born in Oneida Co.; Harley was born in Utica; and Frederick was born in Rome.  At the time of this census, Byron and Grace’s youngest son, Stuart (then aged 7), was living in Utica (Ward 15) with Byron’s widowed mother, Sophia (Cronk) Edgerton.

According to the above census record, Emma was the mother of five children, four of whom were still living.  Byron’s occupation was listed as “farmer”.  At the time of this enumeration, the family was residing at 1930 North Waco.

 

The following obituary for Mrs. Emma (Kilts) Edgerton Washburn appeared in the Utica Daily Press on Monday, September 5, 1938:

 

Oneida – Mrs. Emma I. Washburn, 74, died yesterday, Sept. 4, 1938, at the home of her son, Harley A. Edgerton, 302 Williams Street, with whom she had been living the past year.  Her first husband was Byron Edgerton and after his death she married Edgar Washburn who survives.  Mrs. Washburn was born in Ava and had spent most of her life there.  Surviving, besides her husband and the son, are one daughter, Mrs. L. J. Dennison of Whitesboro, three sons, all by the first marriage, Harley A., Oneida, Fred E. , Alexandria, Virgina, and Stewart L. Washburn, Albany; two brothers, Homer Kilts, Oriskany Falls, and Warren Kilts, Baltimore Md., one sister Mrs. Franke Locke, Hecla.  The body was removed to the funeral home of C. Fred Campbell where services will be held Tueday, the Rev. Harry Landen Williams, pastor, First M. E. Church, officiating.  Burial will be at Ava.”
