Calvin Edgerton was born at Windsor, Vermont on December 8, 1836, the youngest child of Edwin and Susan (Curtis) Edgerton.  He was raised in Windsor, Clarendon and Rutland, Vermont.

Calvin Edgerton attended Yale University briefly as a member of the Class of 1861.  The following entry is found in the Triennial Meeting of the Class of Sixty-One, Yale College (New Haven, Conn.:  Press of Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor; 1864; pg. 90) under the section entitled “Biographical Record of Non-Graduates”:

Calvin Edgerton, (Rutland, Vt.,) was born December 8th, 1837 [sic], and left the Class early in Sophomore year.  He afterwards studied Law, and is now practicing in California.

Calvin Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Yreka City, Siskiyou County, California, residing in the hotel of Charles Le Bean (pg. 657; dwelling #153; family #148; enum. August 31, 1870).  He was enumerated as “Calvin Edgerton, aged 31, Atty at law, b. Vermont”.

Calvin Edgerton was married circa 1870 to Miss Emma L. Oviatt, daughter of Edward and Anna Maria (Wadsworth) Oviatt of Akron, Ohio.  According to the 1900 Federal Census (see below), Emma was born May 1849, presumably at Akron, Ohio.  Calvin and Emma had three children:  Katherine Gertrude, who died at the age of twenty-one; Mae, who married Robert Whaley Potts; and Edwin Oviatt, who married Helen Coombs.

The household of Calvin Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of San Francisco (Ward 11), San Francisco County, California (pg. 404; dwelling #186; family #199; enum. June 8, 1880), as follows:
