The following data on the family of Seth Rice and Candace Edgerton has been provided by Nancy Luther, who is descended through Candace’s youngest sister, Mrs. Ruth (Edgerton) Rice, who married Seth Rice’s brother, William.  Our thanks are extended to Ms. Luther for sharing her extensive and well-documented research on this branch of the family.

SETH RICE, son of Aaron Rice and Lonia Thomson, was born 20 February 1796 in Charlemont, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.  Seth Rice married Candace Edgerton on 27 August 1818,  see Cuyahoga County Probate Court Marriage Index, volume 0001, page 0098.  Marriage license states:  I certify that on the twenty seventh day of August in year Eighteen hundred and Eighteen, I solemnized the marriage contract between Seth Rice and Candace Edgerton both of Cuyahoga County & State of Ohio, Independence, Sept.  11, 1818.  Signed - Peter Comstock, Justice of the Peace.

Per Ohio Census 1790 -1890, the 1820 shows Seth Rice, Cuyahoga County, Bricksville Township, page 052; 1830 shows Bucksville Township, page 134; 1840 shows Bricksville, page 199; 1850 shows Bucksville Township page 144.  Per gravestone at Barr (Rice) Cemetery, “Seth Rice, Feb 20, 1795 -Feb 21, 1885”, “Candace, his wife, born 22 December 1799 died 8 October 1861”.  Per Cleveland Necrology Files, “Seth Rice, 1795 - 1885 buried Rice Cemetery, Brecksville Ohio Reel #068”.  Per Cuyahoga County 1867 -1890, Index to Probate it says, “Rice, Seth, date of death - 2/21/1885, age, 90 years”, found volume 3, page 139.

1.       MIRACK WHITMAN RICE b - 15 August 1820 d -  married Sylvia b - 1826 d - 2 September 1850  Per Rice Cemetery, Sylvia, wife of Mirack W. Rice, died Sept.2, 1850, age 24…Malvina A., dau of MW and S Rice, died Sept 2 1850, age 1 yr…also infant dau, died Aug 31 1850.

2.       OLIVER E. RICE b - 1 March 1827 d - 20 March 1883  Married Henrietta M. Houck b - 2 June 1840 d - 10 January 1886 According to the Cuyahoga county Probate Court Marriage Index, Henrietta Houck married Oliver Rice, volume 0004,page 0196.  Per `870 Ohio Federal Census Index, Oliver E. Rice, Cuyahoga County, Brecksville, page 024.  The Cuyahoga County Index to Probate 1867 - 1890 lists Oliver E. Rice date of death as 3/20/1883, age 56 yrs;  volume 2, page 188;  Harriet Rice death is listed as 1/10/1886; age 48 yrs; volume 3, page 121.

3.       THOMPSON S. RICE b - 31 January 1829 d -  Per Ohio Census, 1790 - 1890, Thompson Rice, in 1850, is listed Summit County Ohio page 351.

4.       ALLEN C. RICE b - 5 July 1835 d - 1905 married Anna Viers b - 1840 d – 1901 According to the Cuyahoga County Probate Court Marriage Index, Allen C. Rice married Anna Viers, volume 0009, page 0338.  Per Ohio Census 1790 -1890, Allen Rice is listed 1870 in Cuyahoga county Ohio,  page 024. Cleveland Necrology files, Allen C.
