Charles Edgerton fought in the Union Army during the Civil War.  He enlisted on August 11, 1862, claiming residence in Berryman, Illinois (Jo Daviess County), and served as a punhand commander in the 92nd Infantry Regiment of Illinois (Company F).  He was mustered out at Concord, New Hampshire on June 27, 1865.

Charles “Edgeton” applied for a Civil War invalid pension on January 17, 1884.  According to the pension application, Charles was 45 years old, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, light complexion, with dark hair and blue eyes.  The application reports that, while on a scouting mission in the State of Tennessee in about July 1863, Charles was thrown from a horse and injured in the right hip, which disabled him from performing labor on the farm.  Charles’ widow, “Emma Edgeton”, applied for a widow’s pension on December 13, 1900. Both applications were filed from the state of Iowa.  (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #504119, Certificate #544941; and Application #731559, Certificate #534213)

The household of Charles Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Peoples Township, Boone County, Iowa (pg. 206; dwelling #52; family #53; enum. June 5, 1880), as follows:
