Charles Daniel Edgerton was born on August 22, 1869 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont, the son of Daniel A. and Clarinda (Wickers) Edgerton.  The Benson birth record actually lists a birth date of September 22, 1869, but this is contradicted by all other sources, including the 1870 Census of Benson, which specifically states that “Chas. D. aged 9 months” was born in the month of August.   The 1900 Federal Census (see below) also lists his month of birth as August, but incorrectly lists the year as 1868.  Both Charles’ death certificate and two burial permits (one at Mount Holly, Vermont and one at Weston, Vermont) also list his day of birth as August 22.

A few years after his birth, Charles’ parents moved back to Wallingford, Vermont, where his father's family had lived for many generations.  They lived on the east side of town, in District 9, where his father most likely worked as a farmer.  An elder sister, Harriet Ann, died in 1876 and was buried in Sugar Hill Cemetery, probably not far from the family's residence.

Charles married Jessie S. Fuller, of Mount Holly, Vermont, on November 5, 1892.  Charles and Jessie settled in Mount Holly, where he worked as a farmer.  They had one child, a daughter, Anna Laura, born at Weston, Vermont on August 2, 1893.

The household of Charles D. Edgerton was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 279; dwelling #78; family #81; enum. June 7-8, 1900), as follows:

According to the above census record, Jessie was the mother of one child, who was still living.  Charles’ occupation was listed as “farmer”.  The household also included one servant (Charles A. Battense) and one boarder (William Wilson).

Charles was hit by a street car in Rutland, Vermont in September of 1912, and died seven days later.  The cause of death is given as “lobar pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, and internal injury by an accident of a street car in Rutland”.   According to his burial permit, his body was transferred to Weston, Vermont, for burial there by Edward Wilder, undertaker.  As yet, no gravestone or burial site has been located.

Charles’ widow, Jessie (Fuller) Edgerton, married Charles W. Nichols of Castleton, VT in 1919, and resided there until her death on May 27, 1925.  Her death certificate lists cause of death as “mitral debility” and states that she was buried in Weston, Vermont on May 30th, although the specific cemetery is not listed.
