Charles Edward Edgerton, son of Guilford Dudley and Elizabeth (Clagett) Edgerton.
Charles
Edward Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census
of Creston, Union County, Iowa, residing as a boarder in the household of
Charlotte Perkins (pg. 227; dwelling #586; family #637; enum. June 10,
1880). He was enumerated as: “Charles Egerton, boarder, aged 23, born in
Illinois, both parents born in New York”; his occupation was listed as
“hardware store”. “C.
E. Edgerton” was listed in the 1890 Directory of Creston, Iowa (Creston,
Iows: Nixon Waterman Co.; 1889) with the following particulars”
Charles
Edward Edgerton committed suicide on February 12, 1891 by slitting his
throat. A number of obituaries
reported the event – notably The
Waterloo Daily Courier (Saturday, February 14, 1891), the Sunday Inter Ocean (Feburary 15, 1891)
and the Iowa State Reporter
(February 19, 1891). The cause of the
suicide was speculated to be financial irregularites related to the Creston
