The Portrait and Biographical Album of Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin (Acme Publishing Co., Chicago, Illinois, 1889; pp. 254-255) provides the following biography of Charles F. Edgerton:

“CHARLES F. EDGERTON, general farmer and stock-raiser, residing on section 26 in the town of Fond du Lac, was born in Rome, Oneida Co., N.Y., and is a son of Hiram Edgerton, whose sketch appears on another page of this work.  He received his education in the common schools of the neighborhood, and spent his early life upon his father’s farm.  When the late war broke out, in 1861, he offered his services to his country, and enlisted as a private in Company B, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry.  During the battle at L’Anguille Ferry, Ark., he received a wound which disabled him from further service, and he still carries in his person the rebel lead.  For about two months he lay in the hospital, when he was discharged on account of physical disability, and returned to his home.  Of the 100 men who formed Company B, about eighteen were killed, forty-five wounded and several of the remaining members taken prisoners.

On his return from the war, Mr. Edgerton, as soon as he had sufficiently recovered his health, engaged in operating his father’s farm.  On the 1st day of January, 1866, he was united in marriage with Matilda Hamilton, and two children bless their union – Kate M. and De Witt, both of whom are still with their parents.

Mr. Edgerton is a man of industrious habits, is energetic, and by good business ability and perseverance, has been quite prosperous.  He is now the owner of one of the finest farms in Fond du Lac County, comprising 280 acres of arable land.  His fields are well tilled, the improvements are many and useful, good barns are there to be found, together with the latest improved machinery and the best grades of stock, and the residence is a beautiful brick building, surrounded by shade and ornamental trees.  Socially, Mr. Edgerton is a member of the Masonic fraternity, belonging to Lodge No. 140, Fond du Lac.  His wife, an excellent lady, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  He takes an active part in political affairs, and is recognized as one of the prominent and influential Republicans of the community.  He has supported that party for many years, and has frequently served as a delegate to its conventions.  He is a friend to all educational, social or moral measures, and feels a just pride in the growth and development of his town and county.  The Edgerton household is noted for its hospitality, and the family is held in high regard by all.”
