Charles Fox Edgerton was born at Pawlet, Vermont on October 27, 1806, the eldest son of John and Mary (Averill) Edgerton. He was baptized, together with four of his siblings, on December 10, 1813 at the First Congregational Church of Pawlet. The origin of Charles’ middle name – Fox – is unknown. Charles was raised in Pawlet and lived there his entire life. His wife was Corilla Clark, daughter of Daniel and Sybil (Fitch) Clark, also of Pawlet. Corilla was born in Pawlet on June 6, 1806. No record of Charles and Corilla’s marriage has been found, but it probably took place in Pawlet circa 1832 - 1833. Charles and Corilla had a family of four children – Helen Wilcox, Horace Wilcox, Cornelia M. and Mary Frances. The births of each of the four children were entered individually in the Pawlet Vital Records. Hiel Hollister’s Pawlet for One Hundred Years (Albany, New York: J. Munsell; 1867; pg. 186-187), gives the following biographical entry for Charles Fox Edgerton: “EDGERTON, CHARLES F., m. Corilla, da. Of Daniel Clark, and raised four children: Helen, Horace, Cornelia M. and Mary. Helen m. James Hayes, of Oriskany, N.Y., and died in 1855, aged 23; Horace m. Matilda Taylor; Mary died in 1865, aged 25. He was in the legislature in 1844 and 1845. Cornelia M. is a graduate of Philapelphia Medical College.” Charles Edgerton was a miller by trade. For many years he operated the Red Mill (a grist-mill) in Pawlet, which was still in business at of 1867. Charles was active in town politics and served in the State Legislature as Representative to the General Assembly two years, 1844 and 1845. The household of “C. F. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 112), with the following enumeration: 1 male “30 and under 40” (Charles); 1 male “under 5 years” (son Horace); 1 female “40 and under 50” (? – possibly mother Mary, actually aged 58); 1 female “30 and under 40” (wife Corilla); 1 female “5 and under 10” (daughter Helen); and, 2 females “under 5 years” (daughters Cornelia and Frances). The household of Charles F. Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 293; dwelling #2024; family #2226; enum. Oct. 30, 1850), as follows:

At the time of this census, Charles was residing adjacent to his son, Horace W. Edgerton, whose household was enumerated directly afterwards on the census roll (dwelling #129; family #139). Mrs. Corilla (Clark) Edgerton died at Pawlet, Vermont on January 20, 1885. The record of her death at Pawlet (VR 3:13) states that she was married and had died of “pneumony”. The record also lists her age as “79 years, 6 months” and confirms that her parents were “Daniel and Sibel Clark”. She was residing in district 12 at the time of her death. Charles Fox Edgerton died at Pawlet, Vermont on October 21, 1892. His death was recorded in the Vital Records of Pawlet (Book 3, page 20). The record states that he was a “widower, millwright, aged 85 years, 11 months, 24 days” and was born in Pawlet, son of John and Mary Edgerton. The record also lists the cause of death as “old age” and states that Charles was residing in district 12 at the time of his death.
