Charles Francis (“Frank”) Edgerton was born at Hamilton, Madison County, New York on July 21, 1833, the son of Leander and Ann C. (Lawton) Edgerton.  The details of Charles’ childhood are largely unknown.  He was presumably raised in Hamilton, New York.  Following the death of his father in 1837, his mother, Ann, was remarried to Jeremiah Shufelt and subsequently removed to Sheboygan, Wisconsin.  The fact that Charles named one of his sons Jeremiah would seem to imply that Charles was on close terms with his step-father.

Charles F. Edgerton was married on July 28, 1867 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois to Sarah L. Batchelder, daughter of Lynus and Arminda (Tucker) Batchelder.  After a few years in Wisconsin, Charles removed to Grandview, Rhea County, Tennessee, where he and his wife raised a family of nine children:  Lelia A., Myrtle L., Dwight P., Carrie F., Frank Putney, Jeremiah Fred, John Abernathy, Charles Edward and Clara Belle.  The youngest daughter, Clara, was adopted.  The two eldest daughters, Lelia and Myrtle, died of Typhoid Fever shortly after the family’s move to Tennessee.

The household of Charles F. Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Civil District #1, Rhea County, Tennessee (dwelling #16; family #16; enum. July 14, 1870), as follows:
