Charles Goodrich Edgerton was born at Pittsfield, Massachusetts on March 17, 1799, the third son and fourth child of Ebenezer and Eunice (Smith) Edgerton.  Charles was raised in Pittsfield and later Whitestown, Oneida County, New York, where his parents settled circa 1806 – 1810.

Charles G. Edgerton was listed as a head of household in the 1820 Federal Census of Camden, Oneida County, New York, with a large household (pg. 146).  The enumeration was as follows:

4 males “of 26 and under 45”  (?);

4 males “of 16 and under 26”  (Charles and ?);

1 male “between 16 and 18”  (?);

3 females “of 16 and under 26”  (?); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”.

Within the next few years, Charles G. Edgerton removed north to Saint Lawrence County, New York (far north in the state on the Canadian border) and settled in the town of Fullerville (aka. Fowler).  Charles resided in Fullerville for the remainder of his lifetime.  He operated the first “public house” in Fullerville and also served as postmaster for many years.  Charles was an original trustee of the Fowler Library, incorporated on April 12, 1831.  He was a member of the Methodist Church (see History of St. Lawrence County, New York; Philadelphia, Penn.: L.H. Everts & Co.; 1878; pp. 380-381).

Charles G. Edgerton was married at Fullerville, New York on April 16, 1827 to Lemira Fuller (1809 – 1862), daughter of Sheldon and Hannah (Luce) Fuller.  Lemira was born in Fullerville, New York on February 10, 1809, and died there on May 25, 1862.   The following marriage announcement was published in the Utica Sentinel & Gazette on Friday, May 4, 1827:

“Married on the 16th inst. Mr. C. G. Edgerton, of Rosser Ironworks, to Miss Lemerra Fuller of the same place; all of the county of St. Lawrence.”

Charles and Lemira (Fuller) Edgerton had four children:  Eunice, Maremus Gilbert, Eunice (second) and Martha Fuller.  Information on the family of Charles and Lemira (Fuller) Edgerton is provided by William Hyslop Fuller’s Genealogy of Some Descendants of Edward Fuller of the Mayflower (C.B. Fiske & Co., Palmer, Mass., 1898; pg. 236).  It does not appear that Charles G. Edgerton left any descendants.  The two elder daughters (both named Eunice) died in infancy; the surviving two children – Maremus and Martha – each lived long lives but were never married.  Martha died at Fullerville in 1898; and Maremus died at Governeur, New York in 1910.

Charles Edgerton was listed a a head of household in the 1830 Federal Census of Fowler, St. Lawrence County, New York (pg. 188).  At that time his household consisted of only himself and his wife, Eunice – that is, one male “of 30 and under 40” and one female “of 20 and under 30”.  Charles was residing nearby his father-in-law, Sheldon Fuller, whose household was enumerated three dwellings earlier on the Fowler Census Roll.  Numerous other Fuller families were recorded in the near vicinity.

The household of “Chas. G. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Fowler, St. Lawrence County, New York (pg. 10), with the following enumeration:

1 male “40 and under 50”  (Charles);

1 male “5 and under 10”  (son Maremus);

1 female “30 and under 40”  (wife Eunice); and,

1 female “5 and under 10”  (daughter Martha).

At the time of the 1850 Federal Census, Charles and his family were residing in the household of his father-in-law, Sheldon Fuller, in Fowler, St. Lawrence County, New York (pg. 239; dwelling #215; family #215).  They were enumerated as follows:

“Edgerton, M. G., Fullersville Iron Works, Farmer, 130”

According to William Hyslop Fuller’s Genealogy of Some Descendants of Edward Fuller of the Mayflower (C.B. Fiske & Co., Palmer, Mass., 1898; pg. 236), Charles Goodrich Edgerton died on August 24, 1878, presumably at Fullerville, New York.  The burial locations of Charles and his family have not been ascertained.
