Charles L. Edgerton “of Lincoln, Wisconsin”
served as a private in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted on August 9, 1862 and fought in
D Company, 25th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment.
Charles’ younger brother, Henry L., enlisted on the same day and also
fought in the same company. Charles L.
Edgerton died of disease at Helena,
Arkansas on August 19, 1863
(see Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers: War of the Rebellion, 1886). Charles was buried at the Mississippi River
National Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee.
A memorial tombstone
was also erected in the soldier’s lot at La Grange Cemetery in La Grange
Township, Wisconsin.
Charles’ mother, “Mary F.
Edgerton”, applied for a Civil War Pension on February 7, 1891. The application was filed from the state of
Wisconsin
and cited her son’s service in the 25th Wisconsin Infantry (see National
Archives Pension Applications; Application #50108, Certificate #353899).
