Charles Lorin Edgerton was born at Boston, Massachusetts on April 20, 1849, the eldest son of Lorin R. and Eliza Jane (Graves) Edgerton.  Charles was raised in Natick, Massachusetts, where his father settled in the early 1850’s.  Charles later removed to Braidwood, Will County, Illinois and from there to Grants Pass, Josephine County, Oregon.

 

Charles was married at Tallula, Illinois on July 20, 1873 to Miss Eoline Gardner, daughter of James and Amelia (Richardson) Gardner of Palmyra, Illinois.  A copy of the marriage certificate is found in the Menard County Marriage Records, Volume B, pg. 10.  Eoline was born at Palmyra, Illinois on December 9, 1852.  She was the younger sister of Mary Gardner (1842 – 1877) who had previously married Charles’ uncle, William A. Edgerton.

 

The following transcript of entries from the family Bible of Charles Lorin Edgerton has been provided by Miss Molly Edgerton of Adin, California.  The Bible, printed in Boston, Massachusetts, is currently in the possession of Molly’s father, Lorin Justin Edgerton, a great-grandson of Charles and Eoline (Gardner) Edgerton.

 

“Charles Lorin Edgerton of Boston, Mass., and Eoline Gardner of Palmyra, Ill. were married July 20, 1873 at Tallula, Ill.

 

“C. L. Edgerton born April 20, 1849, Boston, Mass., died December 25, 1928 in Grants Pass, Or., aged 79 years, 8 months, and 5 days.”

 

“Eoline Edgerton born December 9, 1852, Palmyra, Ill., died December 1, 1882, aged 29 years, 11 months and 23 days.”

Charles’ occupation was listed as “book keeper”.  Charles’ two other children were also enumerated in the 1900 Federal Census of West Grants Pass.  Son Arthur was listed as a head of household (with wife, Grace) on the same page of this census roll; and Ida was recorded as a boarder in the household of Joseph LeMar.

 

Charles Lorin Edgerton died at Grants Pass, Oregon on December 24, 1928.  A brief obituary notice was published in the Grants Pass Daily Courier on December 25, 1928.  A more extended obituary was published a few days later, also in the Grants Pass Daily Courier.

 

Charles was buried at the IOOF (International Order of Odd Fellows) Cemetery in Grants Pass, Oregon.  His gravestone there lists his name as “C. L. EDGERTON” and gives the years of his birth and death as 1849 – 1928.  The top of the gravestone was inscribed with the epitaph “FATHER”.
