The following excerpts are taken from a letter written by Charles Lorin Edgerton Sr. in January 1940.  The letter was addressed to Mr. Arthur Lorin Edgerton, of Grants Pass, Oregon, and in addition to listing numerous details regarding his Edgerton ancestry, gives the following biographical account of the family and life of Charles Lorin Edgerton:

“Charles Lorin Edgerton (The Writer) was educated in the Barrington High School and the California State Normal School at San Jose.  Began teaching school in 1880 and retired in 1931, after being in the school room as pupil, teacher, principal and supt. for 63 years, teaching in California for the most of the time since 1892 until 1931.  After teaching my first school about 30 miles north of Chicago, I came to California via Southern Pacific, to San Francisco during March 1881.  The trip from Chicago required eight days, thence by steam schooner to Del norte County, Calif.  My Father and the children came during May of that year and he purchased 160 acres of #1 redwood land and homesteaded another 160 acres adjoining, where he lived until his death in 1901.
