Charles W. Edgerton was born August 1841 at Thompson, Ohio.  He was the only son of Julius Edgerton and his first wife, Maria J. Warner.

Charles W. Edgerton’s mother died when he was two years old, and Charles was subsequently raised by his paternal grandparents, Enos and Eunice Warner.  At the time of the 1850 Federal Census, Charles was recorded in the household of Enos Warner in Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio (pg. 296; dwelling #193; family #201; enum. August 29, 1850).  He was enumerated as: “Charles Edgerton, aged 9, born in Ohio”.  Charles’ father, Julius, died later that year in Painesville, Ohio.

Charles W. Edgerton, “aged 19” enlisted at Buffalo, New York on May 9, 1861 and served in the 21st New York Infantry Regiment, Company C.  The company fought at Battles in Tennessee, Virginia and Maryland, including the second battle of Bull Run (August 29-30, 1862), Antietam (September 17, 1862) and Fredericksburg (December 13 & 16, 1862).  Charles deserted at Brooke’s Station, Virginia on February 1, 1863 (see New York: Report of the Adjutant-General, 1894 – 1906).

Charles Edgerton was a railroad engineer.  He worked as a locomotive engineer for the New York Central Railroad and was noted to have driven the frist train over the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge.  The following item of interest was published in the Locomotive Firemen’s Magazine (W. S. Carter, ed.; Vol. 23, No. 1, July 1897; pg. 176):

“Engineer Charles Edgerton, a popular member of the B. L. E., and Frank J. Brennan, the more than popular Master of Lodge 12. B. L. F., made a run on the "Empire State Express" on July 16, which will attract attention throughout the railway world.  The train left Syracuse at 2:24 o'clock and reached Buffalo at 4:47 o'clock, making thu actual running time for the 149 miles 143 minutes.  Deducting five minutes for the stop at Rochester, and three minutes each for two slow downs, and allowing nothing for the slow time through the Buffalo yards, the run of 149 miles was made in 132 minutes, or at the rate of 67 8-10 miles an hour.”

The household of Charles Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Buffalo, Erie County, New York (pg. 53; dwelling #434; family #547; enum. June 16-18, 1880), as follows:
