Charles William Edgeton was born at Galesburg, Illinois on March 17, 1843, the eldest child of Sidney P. and Lucy (Clay) Edgerton.

Charles W. Edgerton was married twice.  He was married first on October 27, 1874 at Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mary J. Golden.  Charles and Mary were divorced shortly after their marriage and Mary was remarried to Joseph Roberts.  The following notice of Mary (Golden) Edgerton’s second marriage was published in The Columbus Journal on January 8, 1879:

“MARRIED...ROBERTS-GOLDEN – On New Year's night, at the residence of Thos. Potts, in this city, Mr. Joseph Roberts was united by marriage to Miss Mary Golden, formerly the wife of Charles Edgerton of Omaha, from whom she was granted a divorce.  Justice McAllister tied the matrimonial knot, and we hope the couple thus joined may never have cause to wish it severed, and that in their pathway through life they may be able to avoid the conjugal briars and thorns that must, without forbearance and a proper curbing of the spirit that is always ready with promptings that are wrong, beset the way.”

Charles W. Edgerton was married a second time on January 4, 1879 at Council Bluffs, Iowa to Louisa M. Shearer.  Louisa was apparently previously married as she had a daughter, Mary (aka Mabel), born March 1876, who later took the surname Edgerton.  Mary may have been adopted by Charles Edgerton, although no record of such has yet been found.

The household of Charles Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Omaha (Ward 2), Douglas County, Nebraska (pg. 79; dwelling #164; family #180; enum. June 5, 1880), as follows:
