Chauncey Edgerton was born at Moriah, New York on April 11, 1817, the seventh child of Jedediah and Sally Mary (Spencer) Edgerton..  According to Poultney Historical Society records, Chauncey came to Poultney in 1832.  At about the same time, his parents, Jedediah and Sally, returned to Vermont and settled in Middletown Springs, which bordered Poultney on the east.  “Jedediah and Mrs. Edgerton” were mentioned in the Poultney Church Records; they were dismissed from the church in 1836 and returned to Moriah, where both died soon afterwards.  Chauncey appears to have been the only member of his family to remain in Poultney.

Most of the data included here on the family and descendants of Chauncey Edgerton is provided by the Genealogies of the Poultney Historical Society, compiled in 1938 by Roland Bishop.  Unfortunately, primary records from the early years of Poultney (before 1860) are unavailable, having been destroyed by fire.  Corroboration of much of this data is found in Chauncey Townsend Edgerton’s family genealogy, Leaves from the Edgerton Family Tree (Pittsburgh, Penn., privately published), which outlines the descendants of Chauncey Edgerton in detail.  Our thanks are extended to Alan M. Bourne for providing a copy of this limited edition publication.

Chauncey Edgerton was married twice.  His first wife was Frances Maria Wetherell, daughter of Thomas Wetherell of Poultney.  Chauncey and Frances were married in March of 1839 at Poultney.  Frances died on April 11, 1840, giving birth to their only child, son Francis Monroe Edgerton.  An obituary notice was published in the Vermont Chronicle on Wednesday, April 29, 1840.

Chauncey married second, on April 10, 1845 at Poultney, Emma Frisbie, daughter of Amos and Hester (Sackett) Frisbie of Poultney.  Emma was born in Poultney on September 12, 1826.

Leaves from the Edgerton Family Tree (Chauncey T. Edgerton, privately published), provides the following biographical excerpt for Chauncey Edgerton:

“Chauncey learned the trade of carpenter, and in 1832 left home and came to East Poultney, Vermont.  Here he helped Mr. Thomas Wetherell to build a house, and then married Mr. Wetherell’s daughter Frances, a teacher in the old Troy Conference Academy (new Green Mountain College) in the West Village.  Frances died at the birth of their son.”

Chauncey Edgerton died at East Poultney, Vermont on July 30, 1888.  His second wife, Emma, survived him many years, dying on January 19, 1919.  Chauncey and both his wives were buried at the East Poultney Cemetery, where their gravestones were inscribed with the complete dates of their respective births and deaths.  A number of descendants, including son Francis M. Edgerton and many grandchildren, were later buried in the East Poultney Cemetery.
