Chester Morris Edgerton was born in the town of German, New York on February 18, 1847, the eldest of three sons born to Chester Benton Edgerton and Almira Ives.  He appears to have gone generally by his middle name as most records refer to him as “Morris C. Edgerton”.

Morris was twice married.  His first wife was Flora Marcellis.  Although Flora’s parentage has not yet been conclusively established, it is fairly certain that she was the step-daughter of Morris’s uncle, Locy B. Edgerton.  Locy’s second wife was named Sally Ann (Deul) Mersalis, and when she married Locy in 1858, she had five children by her first husband, including a daughter, Flora A., born in Binghamton, New York circa 1853.  Flora and her siblings were listed together in the household of their step-father, Locy B. Edgerton in the 1860 Federal Census of German, Chenango County, New York.  According to the 1880 Federal Census of Oxford, Chenango County, New York (see below), Mrs. Flora (Marcellis) Edgerton was born in New York circa 1854 – this agrees precisely with the birthdate and location of the aforementioned Flora A. Marcellis.

Morris and Flora (Marcellis) Edgerton had two daughters:  Cora, born in 1871, who married Nicholas Hirsch; and Pearl May,who was born September 1880 and died August 1883 just short of her third birthday.

The household of “Morris” Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Oxford, Chenango County, New York (pg. 318; dwelling #121; family #139; enum. June 16, 1880), as follows:
