Daniel Edgerton Jr. was born on September 11, 1778
in Tolland, Connecticut, the son of Daniel Edgerton
Sr. and his second wife, Mary Cobb.
Daniel was raised in Tolland, and resided there for his entire
life.
Daniel Edgerton was married in Tolland, Connecticut
on May 7, 1801 to Sarah (“Sally”) Lathrop, the daughter of Zebulon and Alice
(Edgerton) Lathrop of Lebanon, Connecticut.
Sarah was born in Lebanon
on December 1, 1782, and was also descended from Richard Edgerton – through
her mother, Alice Edgerton, who was a granddaughter of Richard’s third son,
Samuel Edgerton. Sarah’s younger
sister, Ann, was later married to Daniel’s brother, Reuben Edgerton.
Daniel and Sarah (Lathrop) Edgerton had a family
of five children – three sons, Marvin, Linus and Erastus; and two daughters,
Betsey and Phebe. The family was
recorded in the Vital Records of Tolland, Connecticut (Book 3, page 61).
Daniel Edgerton was listed as a head of household
in the 1810 Federal Census of Tolland, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 363),
at which time his name was written as “Daniel Edgerton Jun.”, in order to
distinguish him from his father of the same name, who was also listed in the
1810 Tolland Census. The enumeration
of Daniel’s household was as follows:
1 male “of 26 and under 45” (Daniel);
3 males “under 10 years of age” (sons Marvin, Linus and Erastus);
1 female “of 26 and under 45” (wife Sarah); and,
1 female “under 10 years of age” (daughter Betsey).
Daniel Edgerton died at Tolland, Connecticut
on November 3, 1811. A record of his
death was included with the family entry in the Vital Records of Tolland
(Book 3, pg. 16). Daniel was buried at
the South Yard Cemetery
in Tolland, where his gravestone was inscribed: “In memory of Mr. Daniel Edgerton Jur who
died Novr 3d 1811 in the 34th year of his age”.
At the time of the 1820 Federal Census, Daniel’s
widow, Sally, and his children were enumerated in the household of his
father, Daniel Edgerton Sr., in Tolland, Tolland County, Connecticut. Mrs. Sally Edgerton was listed as a head of
household in the 1830 Federal Census of Tolland, Tolland County, Connecticut
(pg. 186). At that time, the
enumeration of her household was as follows:
2 males “of 20 and under 30” (sons Linus and Erastus);
1 female “of 40 and under 50” (Sally); and,
1 female “of 15 and under 20” (daughter Phebe).
Mrs. Sarah (Lathrop) Edgerton survived her husband
many years. She was recorded in the
1860 Federal Census of Tolland, Tolland
County, Connecticut
(pg. 555; dwelling #95; family #97; enum. June 14, 1860), residing with her
brother-in-law and sister, Reuben and Ann (Lathrop) Edgerton, at which time
she was enumerated as “Sally Edgerton, aged 77, born in Connecticut”.
Sarah (Lathrop) Edgerton died on October 23, 1863,
presumably at Tolland, Connecticut. She was buried beside her husband, Daniel,
at the South Yard Cemetery,
where her gravestone was inscribed:
“Sally, widow of Daniel Edgerton, Jr. died Oct. 23, 1863, Aged 81”.
The descendants of Daniel and Sarah (Lathrop)
Edgerton have not yet been researched in great detail. The eldest son, Marvin, died in Hartford, Connecticut
in 1827 at the age of twenty-five (see Hartford
Courant, September 24, 1827). The
second son, Linus, removed to Morris County, New Jersey, where census records
show that he had a wife, Phebe, and one son, Edwin. The youngest son, Erastus, was married
three times; he resided in Baltimore, Maryland, Dedham, Massachusetts, and Otsego County, New York. The two daughters were each married and
resided in Tolland County,
Connecticut – Betsey to
Benjamin Lathrop Young, and Phebe to John Wesley Isham.
