Daniel Edgerton III was born at Wallingford, Vermont on September 3, 1793.  He was the second child and eldest son of Daniel Edgerton Jr. and Elizabeth Fargo.  Daniel was raised in Wallingford.  Like his father and brothers, he made his living as a farmer.

Upon his maturity, Daniel removed north, along with his younger brother, Jonathan, and settled in the town of Huntington, in Chittenden County, Vermont.  He was married there on March 14, 1813 to Miss Elizabeth (“Betsey”) Ross, daughter of Eleazer and Elizabeth (Nelson) Ross of Huntington.  Elizabeth was born in Huntington on February 28, 1793.

Daniel and Elizabeth Edgerton had a large family of ten children:  nine sons, Alanson, Henry Nelson, Daniel Douglass, Daniel Douglass (again), Edgar M., Harley, George, Andrew Austin and Joseph Eddy; and one daughter, Betsey.

The household of “David” [sic] Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Huntington, Chittenden County, Vermont (pg. 119), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Daniel);

3 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Alanson, Henry and Daniel 1st);

1 female “of 45 years and upwards”  (?);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Elizabeth); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Betsey).

The household of Daniel Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Huntington, Chittenden County, Vermont (pg. 294), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (Daniel – actually aged 36);

1 male “of 10 and under 15”  (son Henry);

2 males “of 5 and under 10”  (sons Daniel 2nd and Edgar);

2 males “under 5 years of age”  (sons Harley and George);

1 female “of 60 and under 70”  (?)

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (wife Elizabeth); and,

1 female “of 10 and under 15”  (daughter Betsey).

Daniel’s eldest son, Alanson (then aged 16), was presumably out of the household at this time, perhaps working as a laborer on a neighboring farm.

Mrs. Elizabeth (Ross) Edgerton died at Huntington, Vermont on June 24, 1838.  She was buried at the Huntington Center Cemetery in the family plot where her two infant sons had previously been interred.

By 1842, Daniel had returned to his hometown, where he resided for the remainder of his life.  He was remarried at Wallingford on January 10, 1842, to Catherine Cook, daughter of Nicholas and Lucy Cook of Wallingford.  Catherine was born in Wallingford on June 14, 1802.  According to family records, Daniel and his second wife had one child – a stillborn daughter, who was born and died on March 15, 1846.

The household of Daniel Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 323; dwelling #363, family #373; enum. August 12, 1850), as follows:

Daniel Edgerton

b. VT

farmer

Catharine

b. VT

Joseph

b. VT

Daniel’s younger brother, Jonathan T. Edgerton, was listed on the same page of this census roll, apparently residing adjacent to Daniel (dwelling #362).

Mrs. Catherine (Cook) Edgerton died on November 8, 1859, presumably at Wallingford, Vermont.  She was buried at West Hill Cemetery, in South Wallingford, where her gravestone was inscribed:  “CATHERINE / Wife of DANIEL EDGERTON / DIED / Nov. 8, 1859 / AE 57 Yrs”.

Daniel Edgerton III died at Wallingford, Vermont on August 26, 1865, and was buried at West Hill Cemetery, beside his second wife.  His gravestone there was inscribed:  “DANIEL EDGERTON / DIED / Aug. 26, 1865 / AE 72 Yrs”.  The following obituary notice was published in the Vermont Chronicle on Saturday, September 9, 1865:

“DEATHS… In Wallingford, Aug. 26th, Daniel Edgerton, aged 72 years.”
