Daniel G. Edgerton was born September 15, 1834 in Ellery, Chautauqua County, New York.  He was the only son of Hiram Edgerton and his first wife, Louisa Pomeroy.  Daniel was raised in Dayton, Cattaraugus County, New York, where his father settled in the latter 1830’s.  Daniel’s mother died when he was just under seven years old, and his father was subsequently remarried to Mary Ann Judd.

Upon his maturity, Daniel G. Edgerton left his homestate and removed to eastern Ohio.  He settled initially in Madison Township (Lake County), where he was married on September 12, 1855 to Mary Elizabeth Brewer, daughter of Milo and Elizabeth (White) Brewer, formerly of Norfolk, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Mary was born at Norfolk on April 7, 1831.

During the first two decades of their married life, Daniel and Mary resided variously in Madison, Ohio and Harpersfield, Ohio.  They also apparently resided for a brief time circa 1858 in the state of Pennsylvania, as several census enumerations (see below) report his eldest son, Julius’ birthplace in that state.

Daniel and Mary (Brewer) Edgerton raised a family of four children:  one daughter, Louisa C., and three sons, Julius B., Hamlin L. and Ervin Nathaniel.  They also adoped a daughter, Millie, who was recorded with their family in the 1880 Federal Census (see below).  Daniel made his living as a farmer, cheesemaker and dairyman.

The household of Daniel G. Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Harpersfield, Ashtabula County, Ohio (pg. 271; dwelling #911; family #911; enum. June 26, 1860), as follows:

In the latter 1870’s, Daniel resided for a brief time in Earlville, LaSalle County, Illinois.  He was listed in the 1877 LaSalle County Directory under Earl Township as “DG Edgerton, cheesemaker, Earlville, 2” (see The Past and Present of LaSalle County, Illinois; Chicago, Ill: H.F. Kett & Co.; 1877).  Daniel’s younger half-brother, George Dexter, also resided in Earlville at this time, and it is probable that the brothers made the move to Illinois together.

Daniel did not remain long in Earlville.  By the year 1880, he had left Illinois and removed further west to the state of Colorado, where he resided for the remainder of his life.  He settled initially in the town of Leadville in Lake County.

The household of 1880 Federal Census was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Leadville, Lake County, Colorado (District #82; dwelling #59; enum June 1, 1880), as follows:

According to the above census record, Mary was the mother of four children, three of whom were still living.  Daniel’s occupation was listed as “Own Income”.  The family was residing on Euclid Avenue.

The following biographical sketch is excerpted from Progressive Men of Western Colorado (A.W. Bowen & Co., Publishers; Chicago, Illinois; 1905):

“…Daniel G. and Mary (Brewer) Edgerton, the former a native of Vermont and the latter of Connecticut.  In 1856 [Daniel and Mary] moved to Ohio, and after living there a number of years took up their residence in Illinois.  The father was a skillful manufacturer of cheese and built one of the finest factories for the purpose in the state of Ohio.  This he conducted successfully until it was destroyed by fire with a heavy loss to him.  In 1880 he came to Colorado and located at Leadville, his wife and children having preceded him hither two years.  After his arrival here the father engaged in the saw-mill business on Tennessee pass.  Two years of successful prosecution of his enterprise there enabled him to sell out the business and plant to his sons.  He then moved to Glenwood Springs, and in the autumn of 1883 he bought a ranch five miles northwest of Carbondale, where for some years he conducted a dairy and manufactured cheese.  He and his wife are now living retired from active pursuits at Carbondale.  They are zealous members of the M. E. church, and in political affiliation he is a Republican.  They were the parents of four children.  Of these one, Louise, then the wife of Eugene Thomas, died on July 20, 1899 [sic].  The living children are:  Julius B., of Leadville; Irwin N., a Methodist minister at Montrose; and Hamlin L., of Carbondale.”

The Records of the Schwarz Funeral Home (Glenwood Springs, Colorado) provide the following entries for Daniel G. Edgerton and his wife:

“Edgerton, Dan G. page 43, Date of death: 3 OCT 1911. Age: 78 years [sic].  Old age. Dr. Crook.”

“Edgerton, Mary E. page 41, Date of death: 28 April 1911. Burial: 30 April 1911. Age: 80 years, 21 days. Residence: Carbondale. Old age.”
