Daniel Griswold Edgerton I was born at Norwich, Connecticut on November 26, 1793, the eldest son of Simon and Lucy (Griswold) Edgerton.  He was no doubt named after his uncle, Daniel Griswold, his mother’s next younger sibling.  Daniel and his four younger brothers were baptized together at the First Congregational Church of Norwich on November 27, 1809.

Daniel G. Edgerton served at New London, Connecticut during the War of 1812.  He was listed as a private on the roll of Capt. Russell Rose’s regiment of the Connecticut Militia from July 24, 1813 to September 2, 1813 (see Record of Service of Connecticut Men, Part II, War of 1812, pg. 48).

Daniel G. Edgerton was a farmer and resided in Norwich throughout his life.  He was married at the Bozrah Congregational Church on June 6, 1819 to Martha (“Patty”) Spicer, daughter of Ishmael and Martha (Abell) Spicer of Bozrah, Connecticut.  Martha was born in Bozrah on June 17, 1795.  Daniel and Martha’s marriage was recorded both in the Norwich Vital Records (VRp II:702), where it was noted as occurring “at Bozrah”, and in the records of the Bozrah Congregational Church (ChR 3:51).

Daniel and Patty Edgerton had a family of three children – one daughter, Lucy Maria; and two sons, Simon and Daniel Griswold Jr. – each born in Norwich and recorded in the Vital Records there (VRp II:702).

Daniel’s father, Simon, died in February of 1820, and Daniel subsequently took over the family homestead in Norwich.  He was listed as head of household in the 1820 Federal Census of Norwich Town, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 647), at which time the family was enumerated as follows:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Daniel);

2 males “of 16 and under 26”  (brothers Francis and Elisha);

1 male “between 16 and 18”  (brother Elisha);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (brother Charles);

1 female “of 45 years and upwards”  (mother Lucy); and,

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Patty).

The household of Daniel G. Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Norwich, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 124), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 60 and under 70”  (?);

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (Daniel);

1 male “of 15 and under 20”  (?);

1 male “of 5 and under 10”  (son Simon);

1 male “under 5 years of age “  (son Daniel G. Jr.);

2 females “of 30 and under 40”  (wife Patty and ?); and,

1 female “of 5 and under 10”  (daughter Lucy).

The household of Daniel G. Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Norwich Town, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 195), with the following enumeration:

1 male “40 and under 50”  (Daniel);

1 male “15 and under 20”  (son Simon);

1 male “10 and under 15”  (son Daniel G. Jr.);

2 females “40 and under 50”  (wife Patty and ?); and,

1 female “15 and under 20”  (daughter Lucy).

The second female born circa 1790 – 1800 listed in these latter two enumerations was probably Daniel’s unmarried sister-in-law, Lucy M. Spicer, who was recorded with the family in the 1850 and 1860 Federal Censuses (see below).

The household of Daniel G. Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Norwich, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 152; dwelling #2064; family #; 2583; enum. October 29, 1850), as follows:

Daniel Griswold Edgerton died at Norwich, Connecticut on January 17, 1862 and was buried at the Yantic Cemetery in Norwich.  He left a Last Will and Testament, dated October 23, 1856, which was proved in Norwich on February 15, 1862, before Ebenezer Learned, Justice of the Peace.  According to the will, Daniel left all his personal estate and a life interest in the real estate to his “beloved wife Patty Edgerton”, who was also appointed executrix.  Upon her death, the estate was to be divided equally among the children, “or their legal representatives”.  The children were not mentioned in the will by name.

Mrs. Patty (Spicer) Edgerton died at Bozrah, Connecticut on May 23, 1869, her death being noted in the Vital Records there as, “Patty Edgerton, domestic, aged 73 years” (VR 3:49).  She may have been buried beside her husband in the Yantic Cemetery, however no gravestone is found there for her.  The Spicer Genealogy (see below) says that Patty was buried in Griswold, Connecticut.
