Daniel Lee Edgerton was born at West Granby, Connecticut on December 11, 1794, the son of Jacob and Nancy (Lee) Edgerton.  No primary record of his birth has been located.  The date provided here is derived from the exact age at death reported in his death record (Granby VR 3:488).  Although his full name was Daniel Lee Edgerton (after his maternal grandfather), he apparently went by his middle name, as he is almost uniformly referred to in deeds and vital records as simply “Lee Edgerton”.  However, in one quit-claim deed on the estate of his father, he signed his name “Daniel Lee Edgerton” (Granby LR 3:330).  In this deed, “Daniel L. Edgerton” released any claim on the estate of his “hond father Jacob Edgerton” for the consideration of five hundred dollars.  The deed was dated at Granby, December 4, 1828.

Lee was raised in West Granby and resided there for the majority of his lifetime, with the exception of some years at Barkhamtead in neighboring Litchfield County.  He made his living as a farmer.

Lee’s wife was Lucretia Case, daughter of Simeon and Violet (Burr) Case and younger sister of Asenath Case, who had married Lee’s elder brother, Alonson.  From later records, it is known that Lucretia was born at Barkhamsted in December 1797.  No record has yet been found of Lee and Lucretia’s marriage, but it is estimated that it took place sometime circa 1815, probably in Barkhamsted or Granby, Connecticut.

Subsequent to his marriage, Lee Edgerton settled in his wife’s hometown.  He was listed as a head of household in Barkhamsted, Litchfield County, Connecticut in the 1820 and 1830 Federal Censuses.  It is presumed that all of Lee’s children were born and raised there, although no record of the family was entered in the Barkhamsted Vital Records.

Lee and Lucretia (Case) Edgerton are known to have had at least seven children:  six sons, Edward Miles, Jared Newell, Anson Stiles, Marcus C., Lester W., and Alonson, and one daughter, Jennette Elvira.  There were possibly other children (other daughters?), of whom there is currently no record.  [A “Cornelia E. Edgerton”, born circa 1829, and listed in the household of Lee’s eldest son, Edward, in the 1860 Census may have been a daughter of Lee and Lucretia.]  Ruth Cost Duncan’s genealogy of the Case family –  John Case and his Descendants – includes the seven children listed here, most referenced by their middle names.

The household of Lee “Adjatent” was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Barkhamsted, Litchfield County, Connecticut (pg. 369), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (Lee);

2 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Edward and Jared); and,

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Lucretia).

 [“Adjatent” (or “Adjutant”, “Adjadent”, etc.) was a common misspelling of the surname Edgerton.  It occurs quite frequently in the census records of the early 1800’s, and was no doubt a phonetic rendereing of the name.]

The household of Lee Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Barkhamsted, Litchfield, County, Connecticut (pg. 291), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (Lee);

2 males “of 10 and under 15”  (sons Edward and Jared);

2 males “of 5 and under 10”  (sons Anson and Marcus);

1 male “under 5 years of age”  (son Lester);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (wife Lucretia); and,

1 female “of 5 and under 10”  (daughter Jennette).

The household of Lee Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 125), with the following enumeration:

1 male “30 – 40”  (Lee – actually aged 45);

2 male “10 – 15”  (sons Lester and Marcus);

1 male “5 – 10”  (son Alonson); and,

1 female “30 – 40”  (wife Lucretia – actually aged 42).

In January of 1844, Lee Edgerton loaned a sum of one hundred dollars to his brother, Alonson, which was apparently still unpaid at the time of the latter’s death in September 1851.  Lee duly made petition to the administrators of the estate for his claim on the balance plus interest, but this was rejected.  Found among the probate records of Alonson Edgerton’s estate is a copy of the petition of Lee Edgerton to the Granby Probate Court for permission to lodge an appeal of this decision to the Superior Court at Hartford.  The motion for an appeal was granted, but no further documentation on the action has been uncovered.

The household of Lee Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 154; dwelling #182; family #197; enum. August 2, 1850), as follows:

Mrs. Lucretia (Case) Edgerton died at West Granby, Connecticut on January 11, 1855.  According to the Granby death record (VR 3:448), she was a married housekeeper, born in Barkhamsted, and had died at Granby, aged 57 years and 1 month.  The cause of death was listed as “pneumonia”.  Lucretia was buried at the West Granby Cemetery; the record book of the “West Granby Burying-Grounds” (pg. 19, no. 390), lists her death as follows:

“[1855]…January 11…Lucretia wife of Lee Edgerton…[age] 57…[lot] 33”

Lee Edgerton survived his wife twenty years.  He was remarried at Granville, Massachusetts in 1860 to Mrs. Nancy (Rice) Lampson, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Rice) Hill and widow of James Lampson Jr.  Nancy was born at Barkhamstead, Connecticut circa 1797 and died at West Granby, Connecticut on March 29, 1884.

The household of Lee Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 424; dwelling #329; family #309; enum. June 25, 1870), as follows:

Lee Edgerton died at West Granby, Connecticut on March 4, 1875.  According to the Granby death record (VR 3:488), he was a farmer, born in Granby, son of Jacob and Nancy Edgerton and had died at Granby, aged 80 years, 2 months and 24 days.  The cause of death was listed as “lung fever”.

Lee Edgerton was buried at the West Granby Cemetery, where many of his children and descendants were also interred.  His death was entered in the record book of the “West Granby Burying-Ground” (pg. 26, no. 521), as follows:

“[1875]…March 4…Lee Edgerton…fever…[age] 80…[lot] 33”

Our thanks are extended to Ms. Karen Thorpe, of Falls Church, Virginia, who has provided information on the family and descendants of Lee and Lucretia (Case) Edgerton.  Ms. Thorpe is descended through Lee and Lucretia’s second son, Jared Newell Edgerton.
