David Edgerton, son of Samuel and Alice (Ripley) Edgerton.
Silence Fales, daughter of Samuel and Abigail (Elderkin) Fales.
David Edgerton was born in Norwich, Connecticut on August 28, 1718, the next-to-youngest son of Samuel and Alice (Ripley) Edgerton. He was raised in West Farms (the district of Norwich later to become the township of Franklin), where his parents had settled around the turn of the century. David was married in Norwich on September 20, 1744, to Silence Fales, daughter of Samuel and Abigail (Elderkin) Fales of Norwich. Silence was born in Norwich on October 15, 1724. David and Silence had no children. They resided in West Farms their entire lives. David Edgerton died in Norwich on June 12, 1771, his death being listed in the Vital Records at Norwich (VRp I:243). David was buried at Gagertown Cemetery, just adjacent to the plot where his parents, Samuel and Alice, were buried. His gravestone there was inscribed: “David Edgerton, died June 12, 1771, aged 52 years”. David Edgerton left a Last Will and Testament, dated at Norwich March 18, 1769. According to the will, he left his “dearly beloved wife” Silence a life interest in all his real and personal estate; and upon her death, the entirety of his estate was then bequeathed to the “inhabitants of the West or Second Society in Norwich” for the establishment of a fund for the schooling of youths. The subsequent endowment was named the Edgerton Fund, in honor of its benefactor. There is no record of the death or burial of Mrs. Silence (Fales) Edgerton. The aforementioned will of her husband, David, indicated that she was still living as of March 1769, and she probably survived him. |
