David C. Edgerton (aka “Edgeton”) was born January 28, 1795 in Painted Post, New York.  He was the eldest son of Bradford and Anna Edgerton.  David followed the custom of his father in dropping the “r” from his surname.  The majority of records give David’s surname as “Edgeton”.

David C. Edgerton’s wife was Lois Brown, daughter of Daniel and Roxalena (Silsbury) Brown, formerly of Canterbury, Connecticut.  Lois was born at Canterbury on March 14, 1799.  Lois’ parents are buried at the Ames Hill Cemetery in Sullivan Township, Pennsylvania, where David and Lois and many of their descendants are also interred.

David and Lois (Brown) Edgerton were the parents of ten children – Huldah, Elsa J., Bradford David, Mary, Amanda R., Lydia, George D., Doris M., Roxalena and Ethelbert.  All but two of the children (daughters Elsa and Ethelbert) grew to adulthood and were married.

David “Adgedent” was listed as a head of household in the 1820 Federal Census of Painted Post, Steuben County, New York. (pg. 183).  The enumeration of the household was as follows:

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (David);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (? - possibly David’s younger brother, George);

2 females “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Lois and ? – possibly David’s elder sister, Sally); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Huldah).

In 1822, David removed with his family to Tioga County, Pennsylvania, which lay just south across the New York/Pennsylvania border.  He settled in the Mainesburg area of Sullivan Township, where he resided for the remainder of his life.  Genealogical and Personal History of Northern Pennsylvania (John W. Jordan, Lewis Historical Publishing Co., New York, 1913, pg. 1402), gives the following biographical excerpt for David C. Edgerton:

“David and Lois (Brown) Edgerton were both natives of Lindley, NY, where they were married, afterward removing to Sullivan, Tioga Co., PA.  He was a deacon in the Bapist church, and was very active also in the Republican party of which he was a member.”

David “Edgatant” was listed as a head of household in the 1830 Federal Census of Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (pg. 28).  His household included the following individuals:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (David);

1 male “of 5 and under 10”  (son Bradford);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (wife Lois);

1 female “of 10 and under 15”  (daughter Huldah);

1 female “of 5 and under 10”  (daughter Mary); and,

1 female “under 5 years of age”  (daughter Amanda).

The household of David C. “Edgeton” was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (pg. 28; dwelling #51; family #51; enum. October 10, 1850), as follows:

David C. Edgerton died at Sullivan, Pennsylvania on December 28, 1875, aged 80 years.  He was buried at the Ames Hill Cemetery in Sullivan Township, where his gravestone inscription names him as “Deacon David Edgeton”.  The following obituary notice was published in The Wellsboro Agitator on Tuesday, January 11, 1876:

“In Sullivan, Pa., December 28, 1875, of pneumonia, Deacon D. C. Edgeton, aged 81 years.”

At the time of the 1880 Federal Census, David’s widow, Lois, was recorded in the household of her son-in-law, Daniel Canfield (husband of Lydia Edgerton) in Columbia, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  She was enumerated as “Lois Edgerton, mother-in-law, aged 81, widow, born in Conn., both parents born in Conn.”.  Lois died on January 19, 1883, probably at Columbia, Pennsylvania.  She was buried beside her husband at Ames Hill Cemetery.
