Deratha Edgerton was born July 13, 1792 at Franklin, Connecticut, the sixth child and second son of Joseph Kingsbury Edgerton Sr. and Irene Smith.  He was raised in Franklin, but lieft his hometown upon his maturity, removing to central New York and later to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Deratha Edgerton served in the military and advanced to the rank of Captain, as inscribed upon his tombstone.  The manner of his military service has not been discovered.  He may have served in the War of 1812, although no documentation of such has yet come to light.

Circa 1815, Deratha Edgerton settled at Utica, New York, where he undertook business as a “coach and chaise-maker”.  He placed an advertisement  in The Patrol (Utica, New York) on Thursday, March 30, 1815 announcing his services.  He was listed as “Deratha Edgerton, Wheelwright” in the First Directory of the City of Utica, New York (published in 1817).  Deratha later removed south to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Deratha Edgerton died at New Orleans, Louisiana on November 4, 1832.  He did not leave a will, but his estate was inventoried by the Orleans Parish Probate Court in 1833 (see Louisiana General Index of Successions, 1805-1846, Orleans Parish).

Deratha Edgerton was buried at the Old Franklin Plains Cemetery, where his gravestone lists him as “Capt. Deratha Edgerton, son of Joseph K. and Irena Edgerton”.  His death was also recorded at the Franklin Congregational Church.
