Ebenezer Leffingwell Edgerton was born at Pawlet, Vermont on February 18, 1794, the fifth son and seventh child of Jedediah and Lucy (Curtis) Edgerton.  He was baptized at the First Congretational Church of Pawlet on June 1, 1794.  Ebenezer was raised in Pawlet, Vermont and later Moriah, New York, where the family settled when Ebenezer was about 9 years old.  He was familiarly known as Ebb L. Edgerton, and the majority of records referencing him use this name.

Ebenezer L. Edgerton was married on February 18, 1816 to Edna Amanda Harris.  Edna’s parentage has not been heretofore established.  According to the age reported on her gravestone, she was probably born in the year 1795.  Edna have been related to Amy Harris who had married Ebenezer’s elder brother, Curtis Edgerton, in 1808.  Later census records of Edna’s children consistently report that she was born in the state of Vermont.

Ebenezer and Edna (Harris) Edgerton had a family of eight children:  five sons, Urban Curtis, Jerome Collins, Ralph Haskell, DeWitt Clinton and Jedediah; and three daughters, Philena, Eleanor Joanna and Edna Elizabeth.

The household “Eb. L. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Moriah, Essex County, New York (pg. 23), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Ebenezer);

2 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Urban and Jerome);

1 female “of 16 and under 26” (wife Edna); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Philena).

Mrs. Edna Amanda (Harris) Edgerton died on January 18, 1830, “aged 34”, and was buried at the South Moriah Cemetery in Moriah, New York.  Ebenezer L. Edgerton was later remarried to Mrs. Lucetta (Loveland) Bradley, daughter of Enos and Anna (Finney) Loveland and widow of Leman Bradley.  Lucetta was born in Sand Lake, Rensselaer County, New York on March 2, 1797, and had at least one son, Cephas Bradley, by her first husband.

The household of “Eb L. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Moriah, Essex County, New York, with the following enumeration:

1 male “aged 40 – 50”  (Ebenezer);

1 female “aged 40 – 50”  (second wife Lucetta);

1 female “aged 15 – 20” (daughter Eleanor); and,

1 female “aged 10 – 15”   (daughter Edna).

At the time of the 1850 Federal Census, Ebenezer L. Edgerton was residing in Danby, Rutland County, Vermont – just northwest of his hometown.  Ebenezer’s household (pg. 301; dwelling # 71; family #73; enum. August 2, 1850) was enumerated as follows:

Eben L. Edgerton

55

b. VT

farmer

Ruth Haskel

40

b. VT

Mary

7

b. VT

Curiously, Ebenezer’s second wife, Lucetta, was not included in his household at this time.  She was recorded separately residing with her son, Cephas Bradley, in Westport, Essex County, New York (pg. 46; dwelling #701; family #718; enum. July 31, 1850).  She was enumerated there as “Lucetta Edgerton, aged 53, b. in New York”.

Family accounts report that Ebenezer Leffingwell Edgerton died in the year 1858 while travelling west to California.  However, according to the Vital Records of Cambridge, Massachusetts (pg. 58, #41), Ebenezer died at Cambridge on May 14, 1851.  The death entry also reports that Ebenezer was a laborer, married, aged 57 years, born in Vermont, and had died of inflamation of the bowels.

Ebenezer Edgerton’s widow, Lucetta, later removed to Minnesota with her son, Cephas Bradley.  At the time of the 1880 Federal Census, she was enumerated in Cephas’ household in Sciottes, Aitkin County, Minnesota (pg. 4), as “Lucetta Edgerton, widow, aged 83, born in New York, father born in Connecticut, mother born --”.
