Edgar M. Edgerton, son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Ross) Edgerton.
Marguerite Jane Kehoe, daughter of Patrick and Bridget (Byrne) Kehoe.
Children:
Edgar M. Edgerton was born in Huntington, Vermont on December 15, 1824, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Ross) Edgerton. He was raised in Huntington and in his early adulthood settled in nearby Charlotte, where he resided the remainder of his life. Edgar was a stone mason by trade and worked together with his brother, Alanson (an architect), on a number of restoration projects. Edgar Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Charlotte, Chittenden County, Vermont (pg. 87; dwelling #129; family #129; enum. Sept. 27, 1850), residing in the household of Carlos F. Gillett. He was enumerated as follows:
Edgar M. Edgerton was married in Charlotte, Vermont on March 15, 1851 to Marguerite Jane Kehoe of Charlotte. The marriage was recorded in the Vital Records of Charlotte (Book 3, page 207). Marguerite (aka “Margaret”) was was the daughter of Patrick and Bridget (Byrne) Kehoe, who had come to Charlotte from County Carlow, Ireland. She was born on March 11, 1824 at Leighlenbridge, County Carlow, Ireland. According to an anonymous and undated Edgerton Genealogy at the Wallingford Town Hall (FG4), Edgar and Marguerite Edgerton had five children, namely, “George; Nellie [who] m. Frederick Samuel Mills; Elizabeth; Irene; and Sarah”. Census and vital records (see below) show that the full names of the five children were George Edgar, Irene C., Mary Elizabeth, Nellie May and Sarah Mariah. The two elder daughters died unmarried – Irene in 1869 at the age of fourteen, and Mary Elizabeth in 1888 at the age of thirty. The only son, George Edgar, was married to Clara Page and resided in Charlotte. Nellie May was married to Frederick Samuel Mills and resided in Haverhill, Massachusetts. There is no further account of the youngest daughter, Sarah Mariah. In addition to the children named above, it would appear that Edgar M. Edgerton also had a daughter, Anna H. Edgerton, born at Charlotte, Vermont on January 6, 1845. Both Anna’s marriage and death certificate give her father’s name as Edgar Edgerton and several secondary sources confirm that she was born in Charlotte. Anna was apparently either an illegitamate daughter or the child of an as yet undocumented prior marriage. There is currently nothing to indicate the identity of Anna’s mother. Anna H. Edgerton was married at Charlotte, Vermont on March 12, 1870 to Alfred A. Norton and settled with him in South Burlington, Vermont. Anna and Alfred had six children: Alfred A. Jr., John E., George E., Herbert Harrison, Mirah A. and Edward Payson. Anna died at Burlington on May 9, 1924. The household of Edgar Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Charlotte, Chittenden County, Vermont (pg. 232; dwelling #818; family #820; enum. June 30, 1860), as follows:
