Edmund Augustus Edgerton was born in Dayton, New York on November 9, 1853, the youngest son of Hiram Edgerton and his second wife, Mary Ann Judd.  He was presumably named after his uncle, Edmund Edgerton, his father’s next-youngest sibling.  While the 1900 Federal Census (see below) lists Edmund’s birthdate as “Nov. 1852”, all other census records and the ages listed in his two marriage records indicate that he was born in the year 1853.  Furthermore, Edmund’s gravestone at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Holt Township, Michigan gives his birthyear as “1853”, and his death certificate (see below) lists a specific birthdate of “November 9, 1953”.

Sometime shortly after the death of his father in 1871, Edmund A. Edgerton removed to Leadville, Colorado, along with his elder half-brother, Daniel G. Edgerton.  Edmund was listed in the Leadville Directories of 1882, 1883 and 1884, residing at “R. 709  E 8th”.  His business was given as “millling”.  Edmund did not remain long in Colorado, however.  By the mid-1880’s, he had settled in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan and later removed finally to the city of Lansing (Ingham County), where he resided until his death.

Edmund Augustus Edgerton was married twice.  He was married first, on January 31, 1883 at Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Clara D. Allen, daughter of Orlando and Angeline (Davis) Allen.  According to the Kent County marriage record (Vol. 2, p. 124, #1092), Edmund was aged 29, “of Leadville, Colo.”, born in  Cattaraugus County, New York, and Clara was aged 29, “of Grand Rapids”, born in Gowanda.  Gowanda, New York was located just a few miles northwest of Edmund’s hometown of Dayton, in Cattaraugus County, New York, so it is probable that Edmund and Clara had met there.

Edmund’s first wife, “Clara D. Edgerton”, died of tuberculosis on July 3, 1886 at Grand Rapids, Michigan aged 33 years, 1 month and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Grand Rapids (see “Transient Deaths, E, Grand Rapids, 1874 – 1887”, Record #1786; abstract courtesy of Diane Hosler).  A record of Clara’s death was also entered in the Kent County Register of Deaths for 1887 (pg. 75; #1089) with similar details.  This latter record incorrectly stated her marital status as single and her parents as Orland Price and Angeline Price.

Edmund was remarried to Lenna Miller at Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 26, 1888.  According to the Kent County marriage record (Vol. 2, pg. 174, #553), Edmund was aged 34, born in New York, son of Hiram Edgerton and Mary A. Reed [sic]; and Lenna was aged 30, born in Michigan, daughter of James Miller (mother unknown).

Edmund Augustus Edgerton attended the Michigan State Agricultural College at East Lansing, Michigan.  He was listed in the college’s General Catalogue of the Officers and Students, 1857-1900 (pg. 28), the entry reading as follows:

“EDMUND AUGUSTUS EDGERTON, March, 1891 – May, 1896.  Resigned, May 15, 1896, to become Superintendent of the Water Works and Electric Light Plant at Lansing, Mich. Lansing, Mich.”

The household of “Edwin” [sic] Edgerton was recorded in the 1894 Michigan State Census (Meridian Township, Ingham County; dwelling #68; family #82), as follows:
