Edward Edgerton, son of Marson and Lucy (Gregory) Edgerton.
Edward Edgerton was born at Pawlet, Vermont on November 13, 1850, the son of Marson Edgerton and his second wife, Lucy Gregory. During his childhood, the family removed to New York City, where Edward resided the remainder of his life. He was never married. Edward followed the tea business in lower Manhattan, along with his father. He was listed as, “Edward Edgarton, teas” in the 1888-89 Directory of Brooklyn, New York, residing at “286 Chauncey” (see Brooklyn Directory, 1888-89; Lain & Co.; Brooklyn, NY; 1889). Edward’s father, Marson, died in March 1876. On April 3rd of that year, Edward
petitioned for Letters of administration on the estate of his father, “Marson
Edgerton, deceased”. At the time of
the petition, Edward was residing at “No. 9 St. Mark’s Place in the City of
New York”. Edward’s elder
half-brother, Rollin A. Edgerton, was living in Little Rock, Arkansas at this
time, and his younger brother, Charles M. Edgerton, was residing in New York
City. Edward Edgerton died at Albany, New York on
October 4, 1888, where he had gone to receive treatment for consumption and
bronchial pneumonia. An obituary notice was
published in The Albany Journal on
October 4, 1888. Edward was buried
beside his parents at the Old Pawlet Cemetery. A transcript of Edward’s Last Will and Testament has been provided by Robert C.
Wolfert. The will was dated at New
York City on May 22, 1888. The fact
that he had made a will at such a young age suggests perhaps that he was ill
for some time and aware of his upcoming death. Edward’s will was proved in New York
Surrogate Court on October 16, 1888. Original Source Documents: Obituary – Edward
