Edward E. Edgerton was born at North Royalton, Ohio on November 8, 1837, the son of David and Eveline (Stockwell) Edgerton.  His father died when Edward was an infant, and his mother shortly afterwards returned to her hometown of Northampton, Massachusetts.  Edward was raised in Northampton.  Edward was enumerated twice in the 1850 Federal Census of Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts – first, on August 13, 1850 in the household of his grandfather, Elijah Stockwell, and then two days later in the household of his step-father, Caleb Bardwell.

Upon his maturity, Edward left Massachusetts and travelled west, arriving initially in Lee County, Illinois.  He resided for a brief time in the city of Dixon and then removed finally to the city of Chicago, where he lived for the remainder of his lifetime.  He made his living as a carpenter and locksmith.

Edward E. Edgerton was married at Dixon, Illinois on April 30, 1862 to Harriet Ann Parsons, daughter of Aaron Hall and Harriet Newell (King) Parsons of Westhampton, Massachusetts.  For further reference on the ancestry of Mrs. Harriet (Parsons) Edgerton, see The Parsons Family, Vol. I (Henry Parsons; New York, NY: Frank Allaben Genealogical Company; 1912).  According to family records, Edward and Harriet had only one child – a son, David Aaron, who died in infancy.

The household of Edward Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Dixon (Ward 1), Lee County, Illinois (dwelling #33; family #52; enum. June 3, 1870).  The entire household was enumerated as follows:
