Edwin Edgerton was born in Hartland, Vermont on February 13, 1801, the first son and eldest child of Eliphalet and Wealthy (Willard) Edgerton.  He was a lawyer and attorney.

Edwin Edgerton was married at Windsor, Vermont on October 1, 1828 to Susan Curtis, the daughter of Gen. Zebina and Martha (Wait) Curtis of Windsor, Vermont.  Susan was born in Windsor on August 1, 1805.  The following notice of the marriage was printed in the Vermont Chronicle on October 10, 1828:

“MARRIAGES…In this town, on the 1st inst. by Rev. George Leonard, Edwin Edgerton, Esq. to Miss Susan Curtis, daughter of the late Gen. Zebina Curtis.”

Edwin and Susan resided first in her hometown of Windsor.  Their four children – George Curtis, Henry, Susan Curtis and Calvin – were born there.  Edwin later removed with his family to Rutland County, Vermont, where he resided briefly in the town of Clarendon, before finally settling in the city of Rutland, where he resided for the remainder of his life.

Edwin Edgerton died at Rutland, Vermont on July 31, 1891, at the age of ninety years.  He was buried beside his wife in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland.  According to the gravestone inscription there, Edwin had died on July 29th, but this is certainly in error, given that Edwin was still alive on July 30th, when he made his will (see below).  The correct date of July 31st, is confirmed by the following obituary notice, which was printed in the Rutland Herald on Saturday, August 1, 1891 (Volume 30, no. 186):

“DIED…EDGERTON – In Rutland, July 31, Edwin Edgerton, aged 90 years.  Funeral Monday at 3 p.m.”

Edwin Edgerton left a Last Will and Testament, dated July 30, 1891, which was proved at Rutland Probate Court on August 25, 1891.  According to the will, Edwin’s estate was divided into five equal shares, which were left in trust to the family of his youngest son, Calvin, and to four grandchildren – Mrs. Charles W. Perry, Mrs. Charles A. Gale, Edwin E. Aiken, and William P. Aiken.  These latter four were children of Edwin’s only daughter, Susan C. (Edgerton) Aiken, who had died earlier in the same month (July 15, 1891).  Edwin’s two elders sons had predeceased him:  George had died in the Civil War and Henry had died in San Francisco, California in 1887, presumably without issue.  William P. Aiken, Edwin’s grandson, was appointed executor of the will.  A subsequent inventory of the estate, returned and approved on October 2, 1891, valued the property of Edwin Edgerton at $12,500.00.  Mrs. Emma L. Edgerton of Los Angeles, California (wife of Edwin’s son, Calvin) later gave a receipt to the Probate Court on May 26, 1893, acknowledging receipt of a share of the estate.
