“EDGERTON,  ELI P.

Mr. Eli P. Edgerton died of a complication of diseases, Thursday, 11 o’clock, a.m., November 17, at his late home at High Bridge, Jessamine county.   He was 73 years old.   In his early manhood, between 25 and 30 years of age, he left his place of nativity, Rutland, Vermont, and came here to take charge of the machinery employed in the construction of the Kentucky Central railroad, a part of which has been purchased by the Cincinnati Southern.   In 1863, he, Mr. J. E. Cogar, the projector of the enterprise, and Messes Nat. Lafon and Ephraim J. Young formed a Co-partnership and established a large saw and planing mill, near Brooklyn, in this county.  Mr. Edgerton had full control and made it a success.  The firm of E.J. Young & Co. was changed by Capt. Jack Lafon, purchasing Mr. Cogar’s interest and Mr. J. D. Hughes, that of Mr. Young, and the mills removed to High Bridge in 1876.  About a year, since, Mr. Edgerton’s failing health compelled him to give up active labor in the mill and ever since he had been gradually failing.  Thirty-four years ago, he was married to Miss Amanda Cogar, of this place.  No children blessed this happy union and the widow survives.  Both husband and wife were, for many years, members of the Methodist church at Mt. Zion and later of that at High Bridge.  The funeral was conducted by Rev. Wm. Nolan, of Nicholasville, Saturday, 10 a.m., at the home of the deceased and the interment was in the Nicholasville Cemetery.”

A notice of Eli’s death was also published in the Jessamine Journal on November 25, 1898.

Eli P. Edgerton’s widow, “Amanda Edgerton”, was recorded, living alone, in the 1900 Federal Census of Lee, Jessamine County, Kentucky (pg. 40; dwelling #74; family #76).  According to the enumeration, Amanda was born in Kentucky in May 1828.  The record lists her marital status as widowed, and states that she had not had any children.
