Eliphalet Edgerton, son of Elijah and Sarah (Gager) Edgerton.
Eunice Willet, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Leffingwell) Willet.
Children:
Eliphalet Edgerton I was born in Norwich (Franklin), Connecticut on March 1, 1747/8, the second son of Elijah and Sarah (Gager) Edgerton. He was baptized on April 17th of the same year at the Franklin Congregational Church. Eliphalet lived in Norwich (Franklin) and was married there on March 28, 1771 to Eunice Willet, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Leffingwell) Willet. Eunice was born in Norwich, October 1, 1749. Eliphalet and Eunice had only three children – Sarah, Luther and Eliphalet II – before his early death in 1777. Eliphalet’s marriage and the births of his three children were recorded together in the Vital Records of Norwich (VRp II:596). According to the Pedigrees of the Sons of the American Revolution, Eliphalet Edgerton was a “Connecticut militiaman” during the Revolution and died on a prison ship. (see A. Howard Clark; A National Register of the Society Sons of the American Revolution, New York, NY, 1902; ID# 3236) This would explain why no burial site or grave marker has been found for him in either Norwich or Franklin. The Bible of Eliphalet’s son, Luther Edgerton (as transcribed in the Campus Martius Collection, Vol. I, no. 40; Ohio State University; Marietta, Ohio), records the death of “Mr. Eliphalet Edgerton, August 9, 1777, aged 22 years”. (The age listed would appear to be a transcription error – he was actually 29 years old.) Both of Eliphalet’s sons later removed from Connecticut. Luther married Lydia Waterman of Norwich and settled in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio circa 1815, where many of his descendants resided throughout the 19th century. The younger son, Eliphalet II, removed to Hartland, Windsor County, Vermont, where he married Wealthy Willard and raised a family of seven children. The only daughter, Sarah, was married to William Fanning Brown of Groton, Connecticut and also left Norwich, removing to Bibb County, Georgia. Circa 1815, Mrs. Eunice (Willet) Edgerton removed to Marietta, Ohio with her elder son, Luther. Her death was recorded in her son, Luther’s Bible as: “Mrs. Eunice Edgerton died July 4, 1831, aged 82 years”. Eunice was buried at the Mound Cemetery in Marietta, Ohio, where her son, Luther, his wife, Lydia, and many other descendants were also buried. |
