Eliphalet Edgerton, son of Eliphalet and Eunice (Willet) Edgerton.
Wealthy Willard, daughter of Aaron and Mary (Smead) Willard.
Children:
Eliphalet Edgerton II was born in Norwich, Connecticut on July 14, 1777, the second son and youngest child of Eliphlet and Eunice (Willet) Edgerton. His father died less than a month after his birth. Eliphalet was raised in Norwich, but removed in his youth to Windsor County, Vermont, where he settled in the town of Hartland (along the New Hamphire border). He was married there on March 31, 1800 to Wealthy Willard, daughter of Aaron and Mary (Smead) Willard of Hartland. Wealthy was born in Hartland on March 6, 1785 and was only fifteen at the time of her marriage. Eliphalet and Wealthy Edgerton had a family of seven children – three sons and four daughters, all born in Hartland. The eldest son, Edwin, married Susan Curtis of Windsor, Vermont and later settled in Rutland; the second-eldest daughter, Caroline, was married to Dr. Zopher Willard Furber, who may have been a relation of her mother, Wealthy Willard; and daughter, Emily, married Joseph W. Colburn and resided in Springfield, Vermont. Nothing is yet known about the other children. The household of Eliphalet Edgerton was recorded in the 1800 Federal Census of Windsor County, Vermont, with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 16 and under 26” (Eliphalet); 1 male “of 10 and under 16” (?); and, 1 female “of 10 and under 16” (wife Wealthy). The household of “Elipt” Edgerton was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Hartland, Windsor County, Vermont (pg. 597), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 26 and under 45” (Eliphalet); 3 males “under 10 years of age” (sons Edwin, Luther and Calvin); 1 female “of 16 and under 26” (wife Wealthy); 1 female “of 10 and under 16” (?); and, 2 females “under 10 years of age (daughters Caroline and Emily). The household of Eliphalet Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Hartland, Windsor County, Vermont (pg. 156), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 26 and under 45” (Eliphalet); 2 males “of 10 and under 16” (sons Luther and Calvin); 1 female “of 26 and under 45” (wife Wealthy); 2 females “of 10 and under 16” (daughters Caroline and Emily); and, 1 female “under 10 years of age” (daughter Mary). The eldest son, Edwin (then aged 19), was apparently out on his own by this time, although he was not listed as a head of household anywhere in the 1820 Vermont Census. The household of “Elipt. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Windsor, Windsor County, Vermont (pg. 88), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 50 and under 60” (Eliphalet); 1 male “of 30 and under 40” (?); 1 female “of 40 and under 50” (wife Wealthy); and, 1 female “of 20 and under 30” (daughter Emily). The household of “Eliflet Edgerton” was enumerated in the 1840 Federal Census of Bridgewater, Windsor County, Vermont (pg. 466), with the following enumeration:
1 male “60 and under 70” (Eliphalet); 1 female “60 and under 70” (wife Wealthy – actually aged 55); and, 1 female “20 and under 30” (daughter Mary). Eliphalet Edgerton died in Bridgewater, Windsor County, Vermont in the year 1849. He was buried at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, in Bridgewater, where his gravestone was inscribed with the dates, “1778 – 1849”. Mrs. Wealthy (Willard) Edgerton, survived her husband twelve years. In the 1860 Federal Census of Windsor County, Vermont, she was enumerated in the household of her son-in-law, Joseph Colburn, in Springfield, Vermont (pg. 317; dwelling #18; family #18; enum. June 1, 1860), as: “Wealthy Edgerton, aged 75, born in Vermont, housework”. Mrs. Wealthy Edgerton died on February 10, 1861, presumably at Springfield, Vermont. She was buried beside her husband at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, where her gravestone was inscribed with the dates, “1785 – 1861”. |
