Elisha Edgerton III was born in Franklin, Connecticut on October 19, 1783, the second son of Elisha and Eunice (Peck) Edgerton.  He was named after an elder brother, also named Elisha, who died in 1778, at the age of two.  Elisha was baptized at the Franklin Congregational Church on November 2, 1783.

Elisha was raised in Franklin.  He was married at the Franklin Congregational Church on March 22, 1808 to Diana Hyde, the eldest daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Hyde) Hyde, also of Franklin.  Diana was born in Franklin on March 10, 1786.

Shortly after his marriage, Elisha removed, along with his father, to Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut, settling in the northern district of town.  Elisha and Diana resided in Coventry for about fifteen years, and their six children were presumably born there.  Unfortunately, none of the children were recorded in the Coventry Vital Records, nor are there any baptismal records at any of the Coventry Churches.

In the 1810 and 1820 Censuses of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut, Elisha was recorded as “Elisha Edgerton Jur.”, so as to distinguish him from his father of the same name who also resided in Coventry.   Elisha’s household was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 312), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Elisha);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (?);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Diana);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (?); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (?).

The household of “Elisha Edgerton Jur.” was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 943), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Elisha);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (?);

1 male “between 16 and 18”  (?);

4 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Benjamin, Elisha, Austin and Henry);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Diana);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (?); and,

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (?).

In the mid 1820’s, Elisha removed from Coventry to Oneida County, New York, and settled in the town of Annsville (Taberg).  Elisha’s younger brother, Gurdon, also settled briefly in Annsville.  Elisha Edgerton was recorded as a head of household in Annsville, New York in the Federal Censuses of 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860.

The household of Elisha Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Annsville, Oneida County, New York (pg. 343), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 40 and under 50”  (Elisha);

2 males “of 10 and under 15”  (sons Austin and Henry);

1 female “of 40 and under 50”  (wife Diana); and,

1 female “of 15 and under 20”  (daughter Eliza or Eunice).

The household of Elisha Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Annsville, Oneida County, New York (pg. 217), with the following enumeration:

1 male “50 and under 60”  (Elisha);

2 males “20 and under 30”  (sons Austin and Henry); and,

1 female “50 and under 60”  (wife Diana).

The household of Elisha “Eggleston” was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Annsville, Oneida County, New York (pg. 384; dwelling #517; family #517; enum. August 27, 1850), as follows:

The household of Elisha Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Annsville, Oneida County, New York (pg. 216; dwelling #445; family #443; enum. July 1860), as follows:

Elisha Edgerton died at Taberg, New York on June 23, 1861, aged 77 years.  He was buried at the Old Taberg Cemetery, where his headstone bears the inscription:  “Elisha Edgerton, born at Franklin, Ct Oct. 19, 1783 died June 23, 1861”.  Elisha’s unmarried daughter, Eunice P. Edgerton, was buried next to him in the same plot.

Mrs. Diana (Hyde) Edgerton later removed to Oconomowoc, Wisconsin to live with her youngest son, Henry K. Edgerton.  She died there on December 30, 1870, aged 84 years and was buried at La Belle Cemetery.
