Children:
- Marion Lillian, b. March
10, 1893; Smithville, Chenango Co., NY.
Elwin S. Edgerton was born at German, New York on August 19,
1853, the second son of Locy Bertrand Edgerton and
his first wife, Emily Thomas. Elwin
was raised in German and resided in Chenango County
his entire life. His first name was
occasionally spelled as “Elwyn”.
Elwin S. Edgerton was married on January 27, 1892
at Smithville, New York to Minnie Idele
Hough, daughter of Daniel and Emma (Cartwright) Hough of Smithville. According to the 1900 Federal Census (see
below), Minnie was born in Missouri
in October 1850 and had two maiden aunts, Mary and Lucinda Cartwright. Minnie’s gravestone inscription lists an
alternate birth year of 1868, which seems more probable and agrees with the
1920 Census, which lists Minnie’s age as “52 years”. Elwin and Minnie had only one child – a
daughter, Marion Lillian, born in Smithville on March 10, 1893.
Elwin S. Edgerton died at Smithville, New York
on December 3, 1898. A copy of his
death certificate was filed with the New York State Department of Health
(year 1898; certificate #44580). He
left a Last Will and Testament,
dated November 18, 1898, in which he left his estate entirely to his wife,
“Minnie Edgerton”. The will was proved
at Chenango County Surrogate’s Court in Norwich
on December 23, 1898.
The household of Mrs. Minnie Edgerton was recorded
in the 1900
Federal Census of Smithville, Chenango
County, New York
(pg. 187; dwelling #192; family #192; enum. June
14, 1900), as follows:

According to the above
census record, Minnie was the mother of one child. Her occupation was listed as “farmer”.
Mrs. Minnie (Hough) Edgerton
was listed in the 1902 Directory of Chenango County, New York, as follows:
“Edgerton, Minnie I., widow of Elwyn
S., farmer, 108 acres, Town of Smithville”
Elwin’s widow, Minnie, was later
remarried to Samuel B. Wells, of Greene,
New York. Minnie and her daughter, Marion, were
recorded in Samuel’s household in the 1920 Federal Census of Greene, Chenango County, New
York.
According to the enumeration, Minnie was aged 52, born in New York (both parents born in New
York) and Marion was aged 26,
born in New York (both parents born in New York).
Elwin S. Edgerton and his
