Erastus Edgerton was born on June 23, 1806 at Tolland, Connecticut, the son of Daniel Edgerton Jr. and Sarah Lathrop.  Erastus’ father died in 1811, when Erastus was five years old.  Erastus was mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Daniel Edgerton Sr., dated February 21, 1824, in which he and each of his four siblings were to receive a Bible.

Erastus Edgerton was married three times; all three of his wives predeceased him.  His first wife was Mary Cushing, daughter of Joseph and Rebecca (Edmands) Cushing of Baltimore, Maryland and formerly of Hingham, Massachusetts.  According the Latter Day Saints, Erastus and Mary were married at the Associate Reformed Church in Baltmore, Maryland on November 18, 1839, and Mary died less than a year later, on April 10, 1840.  A notice of the death of “Mary C. Edgerton, wife of Erastus, daughter of Joseph” on April 10, 1840 was printed in The Baltimore Sun on April 13, 1840.

In the early 1840’s Erastus moved to New Lisbon, Otsego County, New York where he was married on September 22, 1842 to Julia Matilda Tuttle, daughter of Anson and Tamar (Dunning) Tuttle.  Julia was born in New Lisbon on August 8, 1817.  Erastus and Julia had two sons:  Clarence Cushing, born June 2, 1850 at Cumberland, Maryland; and Anson Tuttle, born July 22, 1853 and New Lisbon, New York.  The younger son died at the age of ten.

Mrs. Julia Matilda (Tuttle) Edgerton died in New Lisbon, New York on February 21, 1857.  At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, Erastus and Julia’s two sons, Clarence and Anson were recorded in the household of their grandparents, Anson and Tamar Tuttle (New Lisbon, Otsego County, New York; pg. 435; dwelling #106; family #106; enum. June 23, 1860).  They were enumerated as follows:

When the 1870 Federal Census was taken, Erastus Edgerton and his third wife, Sophia, were residing in New Lisbon, Otsego County, New York, with his former mother-in-law, Tamar Tuttle (pg. 322; dwelling #197; family #211; enum. August 6, 1870).  They were enumerated as follows:
