Eretus Spencer Edgerton was born circa 1809 at Moriah, Essex County, New York, the son of Jedediah Edgerton Jr. and Sally Mary Spencer.  He was raised in Moriah and apparently resided there for the entirety of his lifetime.  It does not appear that Eretus was ever married.

The household of “E. C. Egerton” was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Moriah, Essex County, New York (pg. 14; dwelling #208; family #216; enum. July 18, 1850), as follows:

The latter two members of this household were Eretus’ niece and nephew – the children of his widowed brother, James R. Edgerton, who had gone west to Galesburg, Illinois with several other members of this extended family.

Eretus Spencer Edgerton was recorded residing alone in the 1860 Federal Census of Moriah, Essex County, New York (dwelling #109; family #89; enum. June 15, 1860).  He was enumerated as:  “Eretus S. Edgerton, aged 49, farmer, b. New York, $4,000 real estate, $800 personal estate”.

“Eretus S. Edgerton of Moriah” was elected Essex County Coroner in November 1863 (see Manual for the Use of the Legislature of the State of New York for the year 1864 (Secretary of State; Albany, New York: Weed, Parsons and Company , Printers; 1864; pg. 363).

Eretus Spencer Edgerton died at Moriah, New York on April 15, 1867, aged 58 years.  He was buried at South Moriah Cemetery in Moriah, New York.  On May 7, 1867, letters of administration on the estate of “Eretus Spencer Edgerton, late of Moriah” were granted by the Elizabethtown Probate Court to “Chauncey Edgerton of Poultney in the State of Vermont and Lyman W. McKenzie of Moriah in the County of Essex and State of New York.”  According to the order, Eretus was a mechanic and had died intestate (see Essex County Probate Records 1803 – 1910, pg. 130).
