Eretus Spencer Edgerton, son of Jedediah and Sally Mary (Spencer) Edgerton.
Eretus Spencer Edgerton was born circa 1809 at
Moriah, The household of “E. C. Egerton” was recorded in
the 1850
Federal Census of Moriah,
The
latter two members of this household were Eretus’ niece and nephew – the
children of his widowed brother, James R. Edgerton, who had gone west to Galesburg,
Illinois with several other members of this extended family. Eretus
Spencer Edgerton was recorded residing alone in the 1860 Federal
Census of
Moriah, Essex County, “Eretus
S. Edgerton of Moriah” was elected Essex County Coroner in November 1863 (see
Manual for the Use of the Legislature of the State of New York for the year
1864 (Secretary of State; Albany, New York: Weed, Parsons and Company ,
Printers; 1864; pg. 363). Eretus
Spencer Edgerton died at Moriah, New York on April 15, 1867, aged 58
years. He was buried at South Moriah
Cemetery in Moriah, New York. On May
7, 1867, letters of administration on the estate of “Eretus Spencer Edgerton,
late of Moriah” were granted by the Elizabethtown Probate Court to “Chauncey
Edgerton of Poultney in the State of Vermont and Lyman W. McKenzie of Moriah
in the County of Essex and State of New York.” According to the order, Eretus was a
mechanic and had died intestate (see Essex County Probate Records 1803 – 1910,
