Eugene Wilbur Edgerton, son of Wilson and Sarah F. (Wood) Edgerton.
Ida A. Foote, daughter of Willis F. and Alice A. Foote.
Children:
Alfretta Corwin, daughter of Youngs and Mary Corwin.
Eugene
Wilbur Edgerton was born in May 1852 in the state of Vermont – probably at Huntington,
Chittenden County. He was the only son
of Wilson and Sarah (Wood) Edgerton.
In his infancy, Eugene’s parents removed west and were residing in
Otsego, Allegan County, Michigan when Wilson’s father died in October of
1859. At
the time of the 1880 Federal
Census, Eugene W. Edgerton was
residing in Trowbridge Allegan County, Michigan. He was recorded there in the household of
Alfred Turner (pg. 385; dwelling #156; family #158; enum. June 9-10, 1880)
and was enumerated as “Eugene Edgerton, aged 27, farm laborer, b. in Vermont
(both parents b. in Vermont).” Eugene
W. Edgerton was married twice. His
first wife, whom he married at Allegan, Michigan on November 29, 1883, was
Ida A. Foote, daughter of Willis and Alice Foote of Saranac, Michigan. According to the Allegan County marriage
record (Vol. 1, pg. 25, #668) Eugene
was a farmer, aged 32, born in Vermont, and Ida was aged 16, born in
Michigan. Both were residents of
Trowbridge at the time of the marriage.
The witnesses were Orrin Train and Clarissa Foote. Eugene
and Ida (Foot) Edgerton had two children:
a son, Wilbur and adaughter, Bertha Mae. Mrs. Ida (Foot) Edgerton died sometime
prior to the enumeration of the 1900 Federal Census, at which time Eugene was
listed as a widower. To date, no
direct record of Ida’s death has been located. At
the time of the 1900 Federal
Census, Eugene Edgerton was
residing in Liberty Township, Wexford County, Michigan (dwelling #91; family
#94; enum. June 1900). His household
consisted only of himself, that is:
Eugene’s
occupation was listed as “farmer”. His
son, Wilbur, was enumerated as a laborer in the previous household. Eugene
W. Edgerton was remarried at Kalamazoo, Michigan on November 20, 1905 to Mrs.
Alfretta Lavinia (Corwin), widow of Joseph Bullard and daughter of Youngs and
Mary Corwin of Mendon, Michigan.
According to the Kalamazoo County marriage
record (Vol. 6, pg. 271, #8236),
Eugene was “aged 52, a farmer, resident of Brady Twp., born in Vermont, the
son of Wilson Edgerton and Sarah Wood”; and Alfretta was “aged 34 [sic],
resident of Brady Twp., born in Michigan, the daughter of Youngs Corwin and
Mary Corwin.” It was also noted that
each had been married once previously. According
to her death
certificate, Alfretta Corwin was
born on May 18, 1856, but this does not calculate with the age at death
reported on the certificate – that is, aged 56 years, 6 months and 2
days. The 1900 Federal Census
(household of Joseph Bullard, Brady Twp., Kalamazoo Co., Michigan) provides a
partial birthdate of January 1861 which is much more consistent with other
census and marriage records. To
date, no record of Eugene and Alfretta Edgerton has been found in the 1910
Federal Census. Eugene’s two children,
Wilbur L. and Bertha M., were recorded together in Mendon, St. Joseph County,
Michigan. Mrs.
Alfretta (Corwin) Edgerton died at Athens, Michigan on May 20, 1918. She was buried at Athens on May 22, 1918
(cemetery unknown). A copy of her death
certificate is attached. When
the 1920 Federal
Census was taken, Eugene Edgerton was
residing with his daughter and son-in-law, Bertha and Charles Prolo, in
Athens, Calhoun County, Michigan (pg. 106; dwelling #145; family #152; enum.
January 15, 1920). He was enumerated
as “Eugene Edgerton, father-in-law, aged 67, widowed, b. in Vermont (both
parents b. in Vermont)”. At
the time of the 1930 Federal
Census, Eugene was still residing
with his daughter, Bertha, now in Reeder, Missaukee County, Michigan (pg.
265; dwelling #51; family #52; enum. April 19, 1930). Bertha had been widowed and remarried by
this time to Emil O. Phillips. Eugene
was enumerated as “Eugene Edgerton, father-in-law, aged 78, widowed, b. in
Vermont (both parents b. in Vermont)”. No
record of the death of Eugene Wilbur Edgerton has yet been located. It is presumed that he was the “EUGENE
EDGERTON” buried at the County Farm Cemetery in Sears, Osceola County,
Michigan. Unfortunately, the gravestone there lists only his name. Original Source Documents: 1880 Federal
