Everett Cromwell Edgerton, son of Everett Wheeler and Mary Maria (Walker) Edgerton.
Laura Fletcher Carter, daughter of Larkin Griffin and Mary Amanda (Cooper) Carter.
Children:
Everett Cromwell Edgerton was born at Charleston,
South Carolina on November 24, 1842, the son of Everett Wheeler Edgerton and
his second wife, Mary Maria Walker. He
was raised in Charleston, but later settled in Aiken Township, where he
resided for the majority of his lifetime.
He was an Episcopal Minister and for many years held the pulpit at the
St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church in Aiken. In July of 1862, Everett C. Edgerton enlisted in
the Confederate Army. He served, along
with his elder brother, James, in the 25th Regiment of the South Carolina
Infantry (Eutaw Regiment). He was commissioned
a corporal in Company A of the regiment and was subsequently promoted to
sergeant. He also served as a 2nd
lieutenant in the 1st Regiment of the South Carolina, Company E (see National Park Service, Civil War Soldiers
and Sailors Online). Everett C. Edgerton was married to Laura Fletcher
Carter, daughter of Larkin Griffin and Mary Amanda (Cooper) Carter, of
Edgefield County, South Carolina.
Everett and Laura had five children:
four daughters, Maria Wheeler, Laura Carter, and Coralie G; and two
sons, James Ives and William Webb. All
five of the children lived long lives, although only the two sons were
married. The following biographical profile of Everett
Cromwell Edgerton is excerpted from Ninety
Years in Aiken County: Aiken County and Its People (Gasper Loren Toole
II; privately published; 1958; pg. 209): “The Rev. Everett C. Edgerton came to St. Thaddeus from Charleston in 1869 at the age of 27. He served until 1895 when he resigned because of ill health. Two of his daughters, Miss Maria and Miss Laura, lived in Aiken many years. Miss Maria was church organist for half a century. She is now ninety years of age and recalls very well the struggles of the church during Reconstruction days in her father’s early ministry.” The household of Everett Edgerton was recorded in
